Sophia yanked her hand free from Lucas’s grip. The moment she moved, pain shot through her shoulder.
She drew a shallow breath.
Lucas looked at her nervously. “Are you hurt? Let me see.”
David stood by, sneering, “Why are you overreacting? I barely put any force into that kick earlier.”
Sophia thought, ‘You barely used any force and nearly cracked my shoulder blade. What would happen if you actually tried?’ She shot back, “How about I kick you instead and let you find out?”
“You did wrong and still dare to act this way? You’re too cruel to be part of our family,” David said and glanced at Margaret, hoping she’d side with him and expel Sophia from their family.
However, Margaret played dumb, lowering her eyes as if lost in thought, making no move to speak. Though she was furious that Sophia had hurt Emily, she knew Sophia was Lucas’s wife.
The marriage was purely for profit. Margaret wasn’t as reckless as David to completely cut ties with Sophia.
“Mom, come on, say something,” David pressed angrily.
Margaret couldn’t stay out of it. Frowning, she said, “Enough. You’ve hit and scolded her. Let her her keep upsetting Emily.”
Don’t let
Emily stared at Margaret in disbelief, thinking, ‘She’s defending Sophia. Am I no longer her favorite daughter?’
Tears sprang to her eyes. Seeing her distress, David felt heartbroken once more. “She hasn’t apologized to Emily yet; we can’t just let her leave.”
Lucas’s gaze turned icy. “David, that’s enough.”
He thought, ‘Don’t touch a man’s dog without asking. Sophia is my wife, yet he keeps pushing. He’s stepping on my shoes. I just let him blow off steam so she’d learn a lesson without me looking like the bad guy.
David’s temper flared. He hated Sophia even more for her bewitching looks that had Lucas so whipped that he ignored Emily’s feelings.
David glared at Sophia. “Since Lucas spoke up for you, get out.”
Sophia didn’t want to stay a second longer. Clutching her injured shoulder, she walked out of the ward.
Lucas watched her walk away, a sudden ripping in his chest knocking the air out of him. Without a word, he swung around and followed her out.
“Wait, Lucas…” Emily watched Lucas vanish through the door, bitter resentment blazing in her eyes. She clenched her fists, tears welling up.
David’s heart ached at the sight. He thought, ‘Emily loves Lucas, and I must make her happy. As for Sophia,
she never deserves him.
Lucas stopped Sophia in the hallway. He frowned at the fresh handprint on her face. “David doesn’t know his own strength. You shouldn’t have argued with him.”
A chill ran through Sophia. Her eyes hardened, her voice icy. “Why follow me? Shouldn’t you be with precious sweetheart?”
“Sophia, do you even realize how irritating you look right now?” Lucas asked and frowned in disgust.
Sophia gave a sarcastic smile. “Pretty soon you won’t have to look at me at all.”
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing.”

His voice was hoarse. “Ms. Quinn, please take Sophie to get checked out.” Then he set her down and walked
away.
Annabelle came over to support Sophia, scanning her up and down. Seeing the handprint on her face, she frowned, “Did Lucas do this to you?”
Sophia shook her head. “No. David did it.”
“He’s crazy! Over Emily?” Annabelle knew David had always hated Sophia because of Emily. But she didn’t expect him to hurt his own sister like that.
Sophia told Annabelle how she had hit Emily at work earlier that day. Annabelle clapped enthusiastically. “When dealing with a fake like that, it’s best to confront them head-on.”
But seeing how badly Sophia was hurt by David, Annabelle felt sorry for her. “Come on, I’ll go with you for an X-ray.
“No need. Nothing’s broken.” Sophia shook her head. Being pregnant, she knew she couldn’t get a CT scan; the radiation could harm the baby.
Annabelle said, “Then at least let a doctor examine you and prescribe a cream.”
Sophia shook her head again. Most bruise-relief creams contained musk or saffron, both of which were harmful to the baby.
She said, “I’m fine. A couple of days’ rest and I’ll be good. Come on, I’ll stay at your place for a while.”
She didn’t want to go back to Nightfall Estate, and she wouldn’t risk exposing her own address. Crashing at Annabelle’s place was the best choice.
Annabelle wasn’t foolish; Sophia’s refusal of both the CT scan and creams set off alarms in her head. She asked, “Sophie, are you pregnant?”
As Annabelle’s words faded, Sophia spotted Lucas approaching from behind. She froze where she stood.
