Lucas had been feeling down all day, but Emily’s few gentle words cheered him up in no time.
“You’re the only one who cares about me, Emily,” he murmured.
Emily burrowed into his arms and grinned, “Of course I do. We’ve been childhood friends forever. No one can match what we have.”
Lucas felt much better now. “How was work today? Those haters didn’t give you any more trouble, did they?” Lucas asked.
“It was okay. The PR team already handled it. Lucas, do you think I’m not cut out for streaming?” Emily asked.
Earlier, Billy had called Emily into the office and gently hinted that maybe she should resign.
“I want to help you, but I always end up making things worse. Lucas, am I destined to fail at everything?” she said.
Seeing how crushed Emily looked, Lucas couldn’t help but feel his heart ache. He led her to the sofa and sat down beside her.
Then he said, trying to comfort her, “No way. You crushed it when you were overseas. You haven’t adapted to how live streaming works here yet. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll send Yadel Group’s sales through the roof.”
Emily’s eyes shone eagerly. She whispered, “Really? You think I can pull it off?”
“Definitely. I believe in you,” Lucas said firmly.
Overwhelmed by emotion, Emily leaned in and gave Lucas a quick peck on the cheek.
Just then, Rachel popped out of the kitchen and caught them red–handed. She cried out, “My eyes. What are you two doing?”
Lucas and Emily fell into an awkward silence. Rachel figured Lucas brought Sophia back to settle down with her. Now, it looked like he wanted it both ways, playing the field.
“He can’t let go of Emily, but won’t release Sophia either. Since when did Lucas turn into such a greedy two–timer?‘ Rachel thought.
Lucas wasn’t thick–skinned enough to ignore Rachel’s pointed gaze. He scooted a bit further from Emily, feeling a little
awkward.
“Emily, try not to do that next time. If Sophia walks in, she’ll get jealous,” Lucas said.
Emily covered her face and sobbed, “Lucas, are you kicking me out? If you don’t want me, I can leave. I don’t need you to push me away like this,”
Emily lowered her gaze, masking the shadow that flashed in her eyes. She thought, ‘What’s up with Lucas? He never has any real feelings for Sophia, so why does he suddenly care so much about her now?
‘I can’t let this keep going. I have to figure something out and get them divorced before things take a turn for the worse.”
Sophia finished her shower, stomach growling with hunger, so she went downstairs to hunt for food.
Rachel busied herself in the kitchen, washing acorns as she got ready to make bread and acorn pancakes.
Seeing acorns instantly brought back memories. Sophia pictured Richard standing beneath the oak tree, tilting his head up to watch an attendant harvest the acorns.
There was no one in the world quite like him. At that moment, Richard was the most striking and elegant man she had ever
seen.
“Rachel, where did you pick these acorns?” Sophia asked softly.
