Chapter 11 Taking Over Beatrice’s Position
“You want Ms. Lawson to work as a secretary? Are you out of your mind?” Someone shot back immediately.
“Ms. Lawson’s got talent, looks, and a proven track record. Which CEO wouldn’t want her? If she hits the job market, headhunters would be fighting over her.”
Beatrice just smiled, not bothering to argue.

The truth was, they underestimated how sharp the headhunters
were.
About ten days ago, someone had already called her, beating around the bush, trying to ask about her career plans. At that point, not a single soul knew she was planning to leave Summit Group.
The conversation kept going.
“Seriously, don’t be so narrow–minded. What’s wrong with being a secretary? She’d be the head secretary for NobleQuest Group’s CEO, rubbing elbows with the richest and most powerful people in Cloudia. If she plays her cards right, she’ll have a brighter future.”
“I heard about a secretary overseas who was amazing at her job.

A few years later, she was promoted to VP, married the CEO, and they lived happily ever after.”
“Ha, at this rate, I might just apply for the job myself.”
“So what does NobleQuest Group’s CEO look like? Have you guys met him? Is he good–looking?”
“I haven’t seen him. The Crowley family’s four siblings are all pretty mysterious. The eldest daughter’s the only one who’s ever been in the spotlight.”
As they continued talking, the conversation drifted further and further off–track.
Beatrice couldn’t help but laugh a bit bitterly.
The way they talked about love with such hopeful eyes made her feel like an old cynic who’d seen it all.
Love? She wasn’t going near that again.
But a career? Now that was something to think about.
She’d considered starting her own business, but the problem was, all her connections were tied to Desmond. Once she cut ties with him, no one would have her back.
She definitely needed to make her resume look more impressive.

That night, Beatrice called up a well–connected socialite who moved in the high society circles to ask about NobleQuest Group and the mysterious CEO.
A laugh came from the other end of the line. “You’re asking about another guy? Aren’t you worried your husband might get jealous?”
“He can deal with it. I’m not concerned.”
“Hold up, wait a minute. You two… You’re not really breaking up, are you?” Scarlett Grant asked, clearly curious.
“Not yet.”
Beatrice kept it vague, but Scarlett immediately caught on.
She sighed. “Well, looks like the rumors I’ve been hearing are true. You’ve been together for eight years, and Desmond’s still such a jerk.”
Scarlett was always blunt, and Beatrice took the opportunity to play the victim card.
“So, I need to start planning for myself too. I heard NobleQuest Group’s CEO’s looking for a secretary, and I’m thinking about giving it a shot.”
“Alright, spill the beans. Are you after the guy, or are you after the money?”
“Right now, I just need to make money.”

A playful, flirtatious laugh sounded. “Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. I’ll make sure you meet the CEO.”
“Thanks a lot.”
“Leave it to me. I’ll have good news for you soon.”
After hanging up, Beatrice returned to her computer.
The information she found online was pretty sparse.
“Damian Crowley…” She murmured the name to herself, already thinking it would be a good idea to learn more about this CEO’s personality and preferences before making her move.
She was lost in thought when the door to her study opened.
Desmond stepped in, and Beatrice immediately slammed her laptop shut.
They each had their own study.
Back when they were madly in love, they’d spend all their time together, but things changed later on.
Now, their relationship felt like a professional one, like colleagues who barely spoke outside of work.
At home, they didn’t even bother to interfere with each other’s space.

“Is something wrong?” she asked, looking up.
“Can’t I come in if there’s nothing wrong?”
“Of course, you can,” she replied, trying to sound casual.
His eyes narrowed suspiciously as he glanced at her laptop, realizing she’d closed it the moment he walked in. It was clear that she was hiding something.
He sank into one of the armchairs, his gaze fixed on her. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
Beatrice raised an eyebrow. “Go ahead.”
He hesitated for a second before speaking, “Madeline wants to join your project department.”
Beatrice’s stomach dropped. She’d half–expected this, but hearing it confirmed still hit her like a punch to the gut.
Her face froze, an icy mask slipping over her features. “Out of all the departments, she chooses the project department?”
Desmond’s expression shifted, his tone turning defensive. “Don’t say it like that. She wants to prove herself. That’s something we should support.”
Beatrice couldn’t hold back her frustration. “If she wants to prove herself, fine. But using my department like it’s a playground? Not happening. The project department is my domain.”

“Come on, Beatrice. You’ve resigned. You’re no longer part of Summit Group. The project department isn’t yours anymore.”
Beatrice froze, the feeling of suffocation tightening in her chest.
He was right. Summit Group belonged to him, and she had no right to oppose him or challenge his decisions.
Even if he was handing over everything she’d built to please his new girlfriend, there was nothing she could say about it.
Seeing the sudden coldness in her eyes, Desmond sighed, trying to calm himself. “Don’t be so hard on her. She’s not here to make trouble. I’ll keep an eye on her.”
“Do whatever you want,” Beatrice muttered under her breath, her voice barely a whisper.
She didn’t have the energy to argue anymore.
Desmond’s frustration was palpable.
