Chapter 16 Time Capsule
After finishing her meal, Beatrice curled up on the sofa.
She’d been deleting and rewriting messages multiple times, but in the end, she just gave up sending them to Gordon.
She had no idea what Damian was up to this time.
He gave her his measurements and now didn’t want the suit?
Was he messing with her?”
She couldn’t make sense of the guy, and honestly, she didn’t really want to. Besides the suit still sitting here, Beatrice figured their lives wouldn’t cross again.
Hearing the sound of footsteps approaching, she quickly closed the chat window, dropping her legs to the floor.
As soon as Desmond walked into the living room, he blurted out, “Where did all your clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry go?”
Beatrice’s heart skipped a beat.
She wondered, Wait, what? What’s up with him today? Showing up out of nowhere for dinner, and now he’s inspecting the dressing
room?
“They’re at the dry cleaners,” she said quickly, trying to keep her

voice steady.
Inside, her mind was racing, but on the outside, she acted calm and a little confused.
“All of them?”
“Yeah, why not? I was getting bored, so I figured I’d tidy up a bit. I’ve mixed up which clothes and shoes I’ve worn and which I haven’t, so I just sent them all to be cleaned.”
“The bags and jewelry, too. My earrings were getting dull, and the edges of my bags were wearing out, so I took them to get fixed while I had the time.”
Her explanation was simple and logical, and it didn’t seem like there was any reason to lie.
Desmond was still suspicious, but he couldn’t argue with her reasoning.
Now that he thought about it, she had been home a lot lately. And every time he came back, she was always running around cleaning and tidying.
“You don’t have to rush,” he said after a moment, his tone softening. “You’re not leaving anytime soon. You can take your time.”
“I’m leaving for a trip soon,” Beatrice replied casually. “I just wanted to clean them up before I go.”

Her words made sense, but for some reason, Desmond still felt unsettled.
His gaze fell on the dark blue bag
on the dark blue bag on the sofa. He bent down to pick it up. “Is this for me? I…”
“No…” Beatrice quickly stopped him, leaning forward to keep him from touching it.
They both froze for a moment, neither finishing their sentences.
Desmond’s face darkened, his expression colder than ever.
Beatrice snapped out of it, quickly adding, “It’s for my dad.”
Desmond’s face betrayed his disappointment. “You bought it for your dad, but didn’t think to get me a suit?”
“Do you need one?” B
need one?” Beatrice shot back.
She figured the suits Desmond had in Madeline’s room probably outnumbered the ones in their own closet.
Hearing that, Desmond was momentarily speechless.
Without waiting for a response, Beatrice grabbed the suit from the sofa, slipped into her slippers, and rushed upstairs.
She locked herself in her study, and after a while, she heard the car leave.
It wasn’t until then that she let out a sigh of relief.
The next day was a perfect Sunday. The weather was just right.
Beatrice visited the high school where she and Desmond once studied.
There were no students in class, but she spotted a few in their uniforms along the way.
She wandered through the familiar grounds, revisiting the places where she and Desmond had spent time together, the classroom where they sat side by side, the tree–lined path they walked down, and the sports field where they’d run together…
Eventually, she found herself by the lake, in a secluded grove where they had buried a time capsule.
It was right before graduation.
One evening after class, Desmond had insisted they come here. The area was pitch dark, and they had used their phones as flashlights, writing on a piece of paper they placed on their laps.
He had told her that they would dig it up and look at it together in twenty years.
The faint light from his phone had shone in his eyes, brighter than any star,
As she snapped out of it, Beatrice smiled softly and retrieved her

“Goodbye, Desmond,” she murmured.

Meanwhile, Desmond was in the project manager’s office. The blinds were drawn, the door shut.
The rest of the team was quietly exchanging glances, wondering what was going on.
Desmond frowned as he flipped through the project proposal prepared by Madeline.
Madeline, completely unfazed, leaned against his shoulder, her hand teasing at his desires.
She wasn’t as beautiful as Beatrice, but she knew how to use her allure and boldness to go after the man she desired.
And so, Desmond fell for her and had an affair with her.
“Desmond, do you want to do it here?” she whispered, her hand moving lower.
“Enough!” Desmond snapped, irritated.
Ile shoved her hand away and slammed the proposal onto the desk. “This is the project you spent seven or eight nights working on?”

He knew she couldn’t compare to Beatrice, but he hadn’t expected that she turned out to be this stupid.
The proposal made no sense at all.

Frustrated, Desmond rubbed his temples, longing for the days when Beatrice had run the project department. Everything had gone smoothly back then.
Madeline pouted, clearly offended.
Just then, Desmond’s phone rang. He checked the screen, stood up, and walked over to the window to answer.
“What is it?”
“Ms. Lawson went out again today. She visited a high school, spent some time there, and then went to a place called Silverbrook. It’s an expensive neighborhood with strict security. Non–residents can’t get in,” reported the person monitoring Beatrice.
The more Desmond heard, the more he felt that something didn’t sit right.
He suddenly narrowed his eyes. “You said non–residents can’t get in? What if she knows someone inside?”
“If the owner made prior arrangements, outsiders could get in.”
“Send me the address of that place. Keep an eye on her.”
