Aurora helped her grandmother to her feet and gently led her out.
Mr. Hogan Chambers had already left.
Mrs. Chambers stood up, let out a derisive laugh, and sneered, “Well, it looks like the Quinn family only listens to Aurora. What a shame. We could have been family.”
With that, she swept out of the room, her posture elegant and dismissive.
Jordan’s expression was thunderous.
Aurora! She was nothing but an obstacle standing in the way of the Quinn family’s future.
On the way home, Aurora kept trying to persuade her grandmother to come stay with her.
But Grandma Grace shook her head stubbornly. “I’m waiting for Payne. If the Winters family won’t take him, then we will.”
She patted Aurora’s hand. “Don’t worry. For Payne’s sake, I have to stick around a few more years.”
Aurora’s heart ached at the thought of Payne’s illness.
But at least, his surgery was coming up soon.
After that, he’d have a chance to grow up healthy and strong.
Aurora escorted her grandmother safely back to the Quinn estate. As she was leaving, she noticed Daniel’s car parked in the driveway.
She walked over quietly, her steps light. “Dan.”
Her soft voice melted the exhaustion from Daniel’s face. He rolled down the window and called her inside.
The moment Aurora got in, Daniel pulled her into his arms and kissed her deeply.
At the same time, the privacy screen slid up.
Aurora found herself straddling his lap, the air thick with intimacy.
She hunched her shoulders, whispering, “Don’t…”
The position was far too compromising.
Daniel buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply, fighting to keep his desire in check.
He could never control himself around her.
Aurora tried to push his head away, which only made him turn and nip at her neck.
She let out a small, startled gasp.
A flush of embarrassment and annoyance colored her cheeks. “Daniel…”
He lifted his head slightly, but didn’t let go, holding her close in a possessive embrace.
So he kissed her again, softly at first, then with growing passion, every touch filled with a tenderness he could barely contain.
“Will you wait for me at the office until I finish work?” he murmured, his voice gentle.
It was getting harder and harder to let her out of his sight.
Aurora’s eyes brightened with hope. “Can we go see Payne?”
Daniel had saved Payne’s life; Payne needed to meet him properly.
Daniel was in a good mood and agreed.
At the hospital, Payne was back to his lively self.
He rushed into Aurora’s arms, his eyes sparkling. “Mom, Dad said someone wants to help me—I’m going to get better soon!”
Aurora kissed his forehead, her gaze soft and full of love. “That’s right. He’s right here. Shouldn’t you thank him?”
Payne immediately scrambled off the bed, his little face serious.
“Hello, my name’s Payne. Thank you for helping me.”
Aurora ruffled his hair, tears glimmering in her eyes.
In that moment, everything was worth it.
