Of course, his regret wasn’t about abandoning his own child, but about failing to get on Nora’s good side in advance.
And then there was Grandma Grace.
Whenever he thought about it, his resentment toward Eleanor flared up again.
She knew perfectly well how much Grandma meant to the family, yet she still insisted on provoking her.
Was he really supposed to stand by and watch the business he’d built over a lifetime go under?
Nora was nothing but a cold-hearted ingrate.
—
Two days passed.
As usual, Nora woke up at the hospital before heading downstairs to visit Payne.
Payne was in better spirits today and had made a point of coming down to meet her.
“Payne!” Nora waved, hurrying over to him.
Payne ran toward her, but his foot suddenly caught on something at the top of the steps. In an instant, he tumbled down, his small body rolling to the bottom.
“Payne!” Nora screamed, rushing to scoop him into her arms.
His face was ashen, eyes tightly shut.
The doctors arrived quickly, whisking Payne away to the ER.
Nora’s eyes were red and swollen, her whole body trembling.
“Aurora!” Daniel rushed in, pulling her into his arms.
“Daniel, Payne fell—he’s covered in blood.” Nora clung to his shirt as if it were a lifeline. “Daniel, please… you have to save him.”
Her voice broke with sobs.
Grandma was gone; she couldn’t bear to lose Payne too.
Daniel tried to calm her, his hand gentle on her back. “He’s not out yet because the stem cell graft was successful. He’s in surgery now—they’re doing the transplant. Don’t worry.”
Nora’s eyes glistened with fresh tears. “Surgery?”
She’d been so lost in guilt and grief that she hadn’t realized Payne was already in the operating room for the transplant.
Daniel nodded.
But his reassurance did little to ease her worry.
Daniel stood a short distance away, listening to Will’s low report.
“Our team found a few glass marbles on the steps.”
“They checked the security footage. Some kid dropped them—it traces back to… Mr. Quinn.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
Samuel?
Will asked quietly, “Should we question Mr. Quinn?”
Daniel shook his head, his voice cold. “No. Call the police.”
If the marbles were connected to Samuel, then Payne wasn’t the intended target—Nora was.
She was pregnant. If she’d fallen, the consequences would have been disastrous.
Samuel still hadn’t let go of his grudge against Nora.
He was reckless and desperate for revenge, but he simply didn’t have the means.
Daniel wasn’t about to let a ticking time bomb like Samuel anywhere near Nora.
