Nora didn’t bother hiding her disdain from Daniel. Her voice was icy as she said, “Birds of a feather flock together, don’t they?”
Always the same—men who think threats are the way to deal with women.
Daniel rubbed the bridge of his nose, unable to protest. After all, she wasn’t exactly wrong.
“I’ll go find Hans,” he said.
Nora’s anger simmered. “I’m coming with you.”
Daniel had Will track down Hans’s whereabouts, but it turned out Hans had already left the country. His flight had departed just ten minutes after Una’s. The implication was obvious.
Nora’s worry for Una deepened.
“Daniel, you need to help Una get out of here,” she insisted.
Daniel was the only one brave—or foolish—enough to risk crossing Mr. Cooper for Una’s sake. He was the only hope she could think of. Besides, Daniel had his own reasons for wanting Una gone.
He agreed with a quiet, “Alright.” For once, he didn’t try to strike a bargain.
They drove straight to Una’s apartment. On the way, Nora kept calling her, but no one picked up.
Her anxiety grew. “Drive faster,” she urged Daniel.
Nora knew the code to Una’s door. She let herself in.
The place was empty. Even Una’s suitcase was gone.
Nora’s knees nearly gave out as her face went pale. Una was gone. Had she not come home? Or had something happened?
Daniel slipped an arm around her waist, anchoring her with his steady strength. “I’ll have someone look into it,” he promised.
Nora nodded, barely hearing him. There was nothing to do but wait.
Thankfully, Daniel’s people worked fast. Within half an hour, they had tracked Una’s movements. After getting out of a cab, she’d gone straight back to the airport and boarded another flight.
Nora’s mind immediately leapt to Hans. It had to be him—Hans must have taken Una with him. She remembered what Daniel had said about Una’s connection to Hans’s parents’ deaths. If Hans had taken Una, it couldn’t be for anything good, especially not abroad.
Daniel was silent.
Nora’s anxiety grew sharper. “Say something!”
“It wasn’t that.” Daniel looked at her, calm but firm. “Hans got off the plane alone. Una wasn’t with him.”
Nora froze. That didn’t make sense. Who but Hans could convince Una to give up leaving Fairvale?
Suspicion flickered in her chest. She watched Daniel closely but found nothing but honesty in his face.
What am I even thinking? Daniel wanted Eleanor and Hans together more than anyone—he’d hardly lie for Hans.
But then where was Una?
Just as Nora’s worries threatened to overwhelm her, her phone chimed. A message. Her breath caught in her throat.
It was from Una.
