“Someone did this?”
Louis couldn’t believe what he was hearing. A chill ran straight through him.
“Who was it?”
Mrs. Winters had gone pale, haunted by the horror of old memories.
“Louis, Aurora’s death was fate. Please, listen to your mother—stay out of it.”
Tears streamed down her face as she pleaded with her son.
But Louis pressed on, “Are you this afraid because you know who it was?”
Mrs. Winters closed her eyes. She’d known that the moment she spoke, Louis would never let it go. But for his safety, there was no use hiding it anymore.
“It was someone from the Chambers family.”
Louis instinctively glanced back toward the hospital room.
The Chambers family?
Was Daniel involved? Or was it Mr. Hogan Chambers himself?
Three years ago, Daniel hadn’t been the official heir, but he already held power in the Chambers Group. Mr. Hogan Chambers hadn’t stepped down yet…
A headache throbbed behind his eyes.
Mrs. Winters wiped away her tears and gently tried to reason with him. “The Chambers family controls everything in Fairvale. If you go up against them, there’s nothing good waiting for you.”
Louis fell into a long silence.
Finally, he urged Mrs. Winters, “For now, don’t tell Nora anything.”
He needed to find out exactly what happened three years ago.
Mrs. Winters agreed, but with one condition. “Promise me you won’t marry Nora.”
Louis rubbed his brow. “I understand.”
With her worries heavy on her shoulders, Mrs. Winters quietly left.
Louis returned to the hospital room where Nora was sitting with Payne, watching cartoons.
He’d take Aurora’s last name—Quinn.
Nora started working with an agency to find a suitable studio space. Eventually, she found a spot not far from her house. After a week of running around, she finished all the paperwork.
On the studio’s opening day, friends sent flower arrangements. Even Daniel had Will deliver a bouquet.
Nora thanked them all with a calm, measured grace.
Three months passed.
Nora’s studio was thriving. She was busier than ever, having hired an assistant and a housekeeper to help with work and looking after Payne.
As for Daniel, they hadn’t crossed paths again. Occasionally, she’d see his name in the news.
The Chambers Group had invested heavily in renewable energy, and Daniel’s net worth had soared. He was now the youngest entrepreneur in Fairvale. There had been a couple of rumors about his love life, but the stories faded almost as quickly as they appeared.
Lately, the news had been all about Hans and Eleanor’s upcoming wedding.
Hans and Eleanor were everywhere, flaunting their romance for the cameras. The press painted them as childhood sweethearts who’d grown up side by side.
