Casey’s eyebrows pulled together as he pressed the gas, sending the car flying down the street.
Madeline bit back a curse. Seriously?
The rest of the drive was silent. Casey didn’t say a word, just sat there with his jaw clenched, radiating a kind of quiet anger that didn’t seem like it would burn out any time soon.
Madeline rubbed her forehead. When they finally stopped in front of her apartment, the car jerked to a halt, making her head spin.
She steadied herself, reached for the door, and managed a quiet “Thanks.” She was halfway out when Casey grabbed her arm, holding her back.
“Don’t thank me.”
His voice was low and sharp, tinged with annoyance. Those dark eyes of his looked colder than ever.
Madeline blinked at him, unsure what else to say. Was she supposed to say, “Nice work, you did your job?”
She climbed out, feeling his stare burn into her back as she walked away. It was like his anger could have cracked the car windows.
Why did everyone act like he had such a terrible temper?
More cars pulled up behind. Cody stepped out, staring in horror at the fresh dent in his beloved car. He looked like he might actually cry. When he caught a glimpse of Casey’s face, he froze. He tried to slip away, but Casey’s eyes found him instantly.
The air felt icy. Cody felt glued to the spot, sweat breaking out on his forehead in spite of his height and size.
“B-boss… what happened?” Cody stammered.
Casey had been fine before getting in the car. Now he looked like he was ready to blow up the whole city.
Casey fixed him with a cold stare. “Tell me. Is my temper that bad?”
Cody blinked, caught off guard. Was he serious? Did Casey really not know?
He wanted to say, “Your temper isn’t just bad, it’s legendary.” But judging from Casey’s expression, he knew that would be suicide. Today, no matter what happened, he was going to smile and say Casey had the patience of a saint.
He forced a smile. “I think you’ve got a great temper.”
As soon as he said it, Cody wanted to smack himself. That was the biggest lie he’d ever told.
