“What did you just say?” Helene shot Madeline a glare, but Madeline didn’t even flinch.
“I said you’re stupid. This is acupuncture. It’s alternative medicine. And seriously, use your brain for a second. If I tried to hurt Julian here of all places, in the middle of the Grayson family’s house, what do you think would happen to me? I’m not suicidal.”
Bodyguards were everywhere in this place. Madeline was just one woman, no fighting skills, nothing. Trying to take out Julian here would be like some amateur assassin waltzing into the palace to kill the king. It was basically begging to die.
Sure, she resented Julian, but she had kids. She wasn’t about to throw her life away.
Helene’s brow furrowed. “Who knows what you’re up to. I’m getting a doctor. If you’re lying to me, you’ll regret it.”
Madeline just lifted her hand in a go-ahead gesture. “Be my guest.”
She went back to removing the silver needles from Julian’s scalp. Helene lunged at her, trying to shove her away, but Madeline didn’t hesitate. She gave Helene a firm push, sending her straight to the floor.
Helene shrieked, landing hard. “Madeline!”
Madeline ignored her, focused on her work.
Helene scrambled up, raging, ready to go at Madeline again.
Without even glancing up, Madeline said in a flat voice, “Stop her.”
Miles had been watching quietly. He knew Madeline was treating Julian, and Helene’s tantrum was just making things worse. He stepped in, blocking Helene’s way with a calm, “Excuse me.”
Helene looked about ready to explode. “Miles, you’re actually siding with her? You know what she’s like. If anything happens to Julian because you let her stick needles in him, it will be your fault.”
Miles didn’t even blink. “Sorry, Ms. Fortner. I don’t know how dangerous she is, but I do know she’s not stupid enough to hurt Julian in front of all of us. You’re just getting in the way of his treatment.”
He knew exactly who was right and who was wrong.
Helene was stuck, unable to get close. She glared at Miles, voice dropping into a warning. “Miles, I’m the future lady of this house.”
