Drusilla heard his words, stood up, and gently nudged him out of the room. Together, they took the elevator downstairs.
The family was already seated in the dining room by the time they arrived.
Drusilla found a spot next to Enoch, while Verena, catching a glimpse of Enoch, quickly averted her gaze.
Enoch, noticing her discomfort, couldn't help but ask, "Why is she still here?"
Blythe turned towards Enoch, a hint of surprise in her voice, "What's the problem? Verena came over to see Colton and Cormac, so we invited her to stay for lunch."
Enoch wasn't pleased at all. With a stern look, he declared, "I don't want to see her in this house again."
"Enoch," Blythe tried to reason, "Is that really necessary? Colton and Cormac are still here."
Glancing at the two kids, especially Cormac, who was looking up at him with big, innocent eyes, Enoch bit back his anger. For Cormac's sake, he decided to let it slide this time. It was all for Cormac's sake!
Lilith breathed a sigh of relief, seeing that Enoch didn't insist on having Verena leave. Verena represented a hope for change, and Lilith didn't want to see that opportunity walk out the door just yet.
Just then, someone else made an entrance.
"Sorry, I'm late."
It was Harlan.
Lilith asked him to come, mentioning that Verena would be around.
As soon as he appeared, Drusilla's mood soured.
Harlan had been busy with the Larkin Group's carnival project lately, making his appearances at home rare. Yet, every time he showed up, Drusilla felt uneasy.
Taking a seat next to Drusilla, Harlan's gaze fell on Verena, and he greeted her with a smile, "So, you must be Verena. Lilith's mentioned you a lot."
Midway through the meal, Lilith and Harlan excused themselves to go upstairs.
Harlan hadn't enjoyed his meal. Frustrated, he vented to Lilith, "Are you sure Verena's alright? I didn't provoke her, did I? No wonder Uncle Enoch disapproves of her!"
Lilith agreed, "It is strange. We haven't wronged her; we've been trying to help her. Why would she act like this towards you?"
Harlan, irritated, sat down and declared, "Forget it. Don't mention her to me again. I don't want to see her."
If he had known how lunch would turn out, he would have stayed away.
...
After lunch, Verena took the kids back to their room.
