Harlan spoke with a certainty that bordered on arrogance, "Since I've asked you to come here, I'm pretty sure we won't be disturbed."
The night had wrapped its cloak around the backyard, a place seldom visited at this hour. Its remoteness promised privacy.
Drusilla, with a hint of mockery in her voice, retorted, "What's this about? You lured me to this secluded spot because your wife's pregnancy has left you... unsatisfied, and you're hoping for a scandalous rendezvous with me?"
Despite her disdain for the man, Drusilla couldn't help but take jabs at him with every word she uttered.
Harlan's face darkened upon hearing her insinuations. He released her hand abruptly, his voice tinged with disgust, "In your dreams! Looking at you now, you're beneath me. You've been shacking up at the Taylor estate, sharing a bed with Enoch every night, haven't you? I have standards. I don't touch anything that's been handled by others."
Drusilla breathed a sigh of relief at his words, "Well, that's a relief. Otherwise, it would've been awkward explaining this to my baby."
"Baby?" Harlan raised an eyebrow.
"Of course, I'm talking about Enoch," Drusilla replied nonchalantly. "Is there a problem?"
"Have you no shame?" Harlan was appalled to hear her refer to Enoch as 'baby', finding her audacity revolting.
Now, more than ever, she seemed utterly shameless.
"I don't need shame as long as I have him," Drusilla shot back, undeterred.
Harlan watched her, his lips pressed together in a thin line, at a loss for words.
It was as if he was facing a rascal with whom reasoning was futile.
Harlan never imagined there would come a day when he'd be left speechless before Drusilla.
Just then, footsteps approached, breaking the tense silence. "This is the spot!"
Saskia, standing beside Blythe, couldn't hide her schadenfreude, "See? I told you she's no good. Sneaking out here in the middle of the night for a secret rendezvous. She's always been without morals, and it seems nothing has changed!"
Caught in an awkward position by his mother's words, Harlan felt a deep embarrassment.
Though he and Drusilla had done nothing wrong, his mother's insinuations painted a different picture.
Drusilla, catching a glimpse of his discomfort, walked past him towards Blythe and Saskia.
Saskia, basking in her perceived victory, looked smugly at Drusilla. She had been nursing a grudge since being outwitted by Enoch earlier and was constantly on the lookout for a chance to fault Drusilla.
And now, she thought she had her moment.
Blythe, on the other hand, wore a frown. She had been skeptical when Saskia summoned her, but the sight of Drusilla with a man in the garden had given her pause.
