Drusilla locked eyes with the man before her, her voice tinged with resignation, "You know I don't have a choice."
He had her cornered, fully exploiting her vulnerability to make such an outrageous demand.
Enoch, observing her reluctant submission, nodded slightly, "Seems you're not beyond hope after all."
At least she showed more sense than Odette.
Odette seemed utterly indifferent to the potential ruin of the Lawson family.
Of course, if not for Drusilla's sake, Enoch would have crushed Leander's business without a second thought.
...
Drusilla sat still, her gaze fixed on Enoch who hadn't moved.
"Oberon, leave us," Enoch suddenly said.
Throughout their conversation, Oberon had been standing by. At Enoch's command, he nodded and exited, quietly closing the door behind him.
"Come here," Enoch directed.
Hearing this, Drusilla stood and walked around the table to his side.
"Sit here," he patted the chair next to him.
Without protest, Drusilla complied.
Though she had agreed to put aside any talk of divorce until his leg healed, the words exchanged the night before had irrevocably altered her feelings for him. She found herself speaking less in his presence.
She vowed never to let herself fall for him again!
From now on, she would guard her heart, refusing to succumb to undeserved affections.
She genuinely cared for him, yet he wielded her affections as a weapon against her.
All men must be the same, she thought, bitterly disappointed even in him.
Seeing her so distraught lit a fire in Enoch, "Just one kiss and you make such a fuss? What, you'd rather kiss Serge? Is it that unbearable, being with me because you can't be with him? You hate me that much?"
Drusilla, bewildered by his tirade, blinked back tears, unsure of what he was driving at.
Seizing the moment, Enoch's fingers gently lifted her chin, her eyes brimming with hurt, as if he was the villain in her story.
He couldn't stand seeing her like this; it felt as if his heart was being crushed.
He yearned to see her happy, to witness her smile, to watch her playful and carefree around him.
Yet, he couldn't shake off the fear that she might despise him just as Odette did.
