Blythe never thought Wendell would take such a shine to Drusilla. When Lilith first mentioned it, she had her doubts about its truth.
Drusilla nodded, "Sure, Grandpa, let's head to breakfast."
Wendell, who had been refusing to eat all morning, now made his way to the dining room and took a seat at the summon of Drusilla.
The whole family had been running around all morning, just waiting for this meal. Harlan was especially famished.
As everyone settled down at the dining table, Drusilla took the seat next to Wendell. But then, he said to her, “Odette, sit across from me.”
Drusilla glanced across the table, her gaze faltering for a moment. It wasn’t just any seat; it was right next to Enoch. She replied to Wendell, “I’ll stay here next to you.”
“No, sit over there.” Wendell’s current wish was to see her and Enoch cozy up together.
With a bashful smile, Drusilla hesitated, only to hear Blythe say, “Go on, sit there. Grandpa surely wants to see you next to Enoch. He’s been hoping Enoch would settle down soon.”
Reluctantly, Drusilla stood up and took the seat next to Enoch.
As soon as she did, she could feel Harlan’s eyes burning holes into her.
Harlan, who was starving just moments ago, suddenly felt like his hunger was replaced by irritation at the sight of Drusilla sitting next to Enoch. Even after his warning at the hospital yesterday about ending this pretend marriage game, here she was, continuing the charade.
Initially uneasy, Drusilla found comfort in Harlan’s discomfort. She even started a conversation, asking, “Have you had breakfast?”
Was Harlan bothered by her closeness with Enoch? Well, she wasn’t about to play by his rules.
Blythe said, "The doctor said that he has the intention of coming home, and it would be good for his condition to have him stay at home."
The family had always treated Wendell with respect, despite his age. They never saw him as a burden, nor did they think of sending him away to a hospital.
Listening to Blythe, Harlan suggested, “It might be better for him to stay at the hospital. The doctors there are more equipped, and he’s just started to get better. It wouldn’t be good if his condition worsened.”
Enoch, who had been quiet, frowned at Harlan’s words. Looking at Harlan, he asked, “Does Grandpa being here bother you?”
Even though Wendell often caused a bit of chaos and was a handful, Enoch still wanted him at home. After all, Wendell was getting on in years, and they wanted to cherish every moment with him.
Harlan’s suggestion of sending Wendell back to the hospital didn’t sit well with him.
