Lilith instantly felt she had been far too polite to Drusilla! Indeed, if Drusilla could be this outrageous towards Harlan, what wouldn't she do to someone she just met like Enoch?
Drusilla said, “What’s wrong with Enoch? He’s alive and kicking, isn’t he? He’s not dead.”
“And you’d prefer if he were?” Lilith couldn’t hide her shock.
“Is that really your level of comprehension, Ms. Larkin?” Drusilla looked at her, at a loss for words.
“Drusilla, you will get what’s coming to you! And to think you’re a mother. I can’t imagine how your kids are going to make it in the world with an example like you.”
Mentioning her children made Drusilla frown. She glanced at Harlan standing beside her, now puffing up with Lilith’s support.
Drusilla retorted, “I’ve already had my share of bad karma, which is why I ended up with people like you. But Ms. Larkin, so beautiful and kind, I wonder what bad deeds you must’ve done to end up in the same boat as me.”
Hearing Drusilla turn the conversation towards him, Harlan scowled, “Drusilla.”
“Isn’t it true?” Drusilla looked at Harlan, a smirk playing on her lips. “Seeing your wife stand up for you against me must really boost your ego. You must think you’re quite the charmer.”
“This is between you and me, leave Harlan out of it!” Lilith fiercely defended.
Drusilla continued, “What could possibly be between us? We have no bad blood. You dislike me because of Harlan, don’t you?”
Lilith fired back, “Not until you mentioned it, but now that you have, it reminds me of what you’ve done. Look at what you’ve turned Harlan into. It was clearly your fault, and yet, he had to apologize to you. And Uncle Enoch almost had to send him off to Africana because of you.”
Drusilla raised an eyebrow. “Almost? Oh, Enoch agreed to let him stay, did he? That won’t do. I must speak with him to make sure Harlan is sent packing!”
The slap took Drusilla by surprise; she hadn’t expected Lilith, who appeared so refined, to resort to violence. She touched her face and asked, “Is this your upbringing, Ms. Larkin?”
It was rare for Lilith to hit anyone! But seeing Drusilla like this, she felt justified.
Her face cold, she said, “Not satisfied? I can keep going until you are.”
With another slap heading her way, Lilith added, “This one’s for Harlan!”
Just as the slap was about to land, Drusilla grabbed Lilith’s wrist, stopping her hand mid-air.
Drusilla stared at Lilith. “I could accept being hit for any reason, but for Harlan? That, I cannot accept!”
