Aveline felt uneasy as she drank her water, wondering why Xavier and Fiona were taking so long to return after see- ing the two officers out.

Was Xavier really going to do something illegal for Josephine?

He didn’t seem like that kind of person.

Aveline knew that all too well.

From outside the door came Jacob’s furious voice, “Aveline, are you crazy? How dare you call the cops on your own paternal cousin.”

Jacob stormed into the hospital room, pointing his finger at Aveline, but was stunned to see Rupert and Lauren were also there.

Josephine hadn’t told him that Rupert and Lauren were here as well.

Jacob froze for a moment, then said in a fawning tone, “My dear Rupert, Lauren, you’re here too. I suppose you’re also here to condemn my heartless daughter?”

Xavier walked in with a stern expression and pulled Jacob away.

Jacob said to him, “Son–in–law, Aveline is out of line. Let me teach her a good lesson, otherwise she’ll just keep caus- ing trouble for the. I feel terrible about it.”

Aveline sneered, putting down the cup. “Jacob, what do you think I am? Not a person, but an object? You think you can just hit me whenever you want?”

“The police haven’t gone far. Do you need me to call them back?”

Jacob pointed at Aveline, furious. “What, you’d send your own father to jail?”

Fiona had returned with Xavier. She walked further in and said in a low voice, “A father committing violence against his own daughter is also a crime. It definitely means jail time. Jacob, you’re an educated man, you can’t possibly not know that, right?”

“If you don’t know, would you like me, a lawyer, to give you a quick lesson on the law?”

Seeing everyone in the room staring at him, Jacob felt utterly humiliated and tried to argue his way out of it.

“Who said I was going to hit her? I just wanted to discipline her, to reason with her. She’s the one being unreason- able.”

At that point, Rupert spoke up. “Xavier, see your father–in–law out. Aveline isn’t fully recovered yet, she needs to rest.”

Jacob quickly turned to Rupert and said, “My dear Rupert, I’m only doing this for the good of the…”

Xavier cut him off, “Let me walk you out.”

Jacob frowned. He had no choice but to follow Xavier out. But at the doorway, he turned back.

“Aveline, you threw milk on your mother. You have to apologize to her.”

Aveline said coldly, “My mother is already in heaven.”

Jacob was at a loss for words, then said, “I’m talking about your stepmother.”

Aveline said in a cold voice, “If you’re talking about Courtney, in my eyes, she’s just a shameless other woman.

I will never apologize to her. If you have the guts, go ahead and sue me.”

Jacob was out of options, so he had to leave with Xavier.
