“Auntie Aveline, if you don’t like Uncle Xavier, why did you marry him?”
“My mom says only people who love each other can get married. My mom and my dad love each other, so they got
married.”
Aveline was at a loss for words.
Xavier glanced at her and let out a soft chuckle.
To Aveline, it sounded full of mockery. With a cold face and a cold voice, she said, “Because your auntie was silly before and didn’t know that only people in love should get married. Now I know, so your auntie can’t be silly any- more.”
Valentina blinked her round eyes and looked at Aveline. “But Auntie Aveline, you’re already married to Uncle Xavier. What are you going to do?
Can you still marry someone you love?”
Xavier frowned slightly and was about to speak, but Aveline spoke first. “Why not? We can just get a divorce.”
Xavier gave Aveline a deep look, his voice slightly cold. “Why are you telling a child this?”
Valentina thought Xavier assumed she didn’t understand and immediately said, “Uncle Xavier, I know what a divorce is. I asked you before if Auntie Aveline wanted to divorce you.”
A mocking smile touched Aveline’s lips. She picked up a Beef Skewer and started eating, not sparing Xavier a glance. Xavier stared at the smile on Aveline’s lips. “Your auntie is talking nonsense. Don’t take her seriously.”
Aveline was about to speak when Xavier cut her off coldly, “That’s enough. Stop it.
Valentina is only five.”
Aveline gave a faint smile and looked at Xavier. “Some ideas are important. You have to teach them to a child early so she won’t make mistakes when she grows up.”
“Of course, Valentina isn’t my child, so it’s not my place to teach her. But I think what Brielle taught is right. People really should only marry someone they love.”
Xavier stared at Aveline without speaking.
Aveline didn’t look at him, instead looking at Valentina. “Valentina, remember what your mom said.”
Valentina nodded. “I will, Auntie Aveline.”

Then Valentina glanced at Xavier, sighed, and shook her head.
It was as if she thought her uncle was a lost cause, or she pitied him.
Seeing this, Xavier laughed. “Why are you looking at your uncle like that?”

Valentina glanced at him, then at Aveline, shook her head without a word, and went back to eating her food.
After Valentina had eaten her fill and had enough fun, she got sleepy, and her eyelids started to droop.
Xavier picked her up and walked towards the car.
Aveline followed silently behind them.
Once in the car, Aveline held Valentina in her arms, and she quickly fell asleep.
Halfway there, Xavier asked, “Is she asleep?”
Aveline gave a cold “mhm.”
Then she heard Xavier continue, “Don’t say things like that to Valentina again. She’ll get the wrong idea.”
Aveline let out a silent, cold laugh and didn’t respond.
When she didn’t say anything, Xavier said, “Kids can’t keep secrets. It wouldn’t be good if she said something in front of the Patriarch one day.”
So he was worried Rupert would find out.
Aveline continued to sneer silently, still ignoring him.
Whether he felt he’d warned her enough, or just got bored of talking to himself since Aveline wasn’t answering, Xavier fell silent.
Once they got to the hotel, Xavier carried Valentina into the elevator. “Valentina can sleep with you tonight.”
Aveline said coolly, “She’s your niece, not mine. I have no obligation to watch her.”
Xavier laughed. “It’s a good thing Valentina’s asleep. If she heard you say that, she’d be so hurt. She’d definitely start crying.”
“You’re her beautiful aunt, after all.”
Aveline stared blankly at the numbers on the display, ignoring him.
Xavier said lightly, “Or you could stay in the suite on the 18th floor. It has a few bedrooms. Take your pick.”
Aveline still didn’t answer him. When the elevator reached the 16th floor and the doors opened, she walked out with- out a word.
As she reached the elevator doors, Aveline thought of something and couldn’t help but turn back to say, “You’d better help her brush her teeth before she goes to sleep.”

Or she’ll get cavities.

Xavier raised an eyebrow, holding the elevator door with one hand. “She’s asleep. How is she supposed to brush her teeth?”
Aveline replied, “Wake her up.”
“She’s just a little kid. It’s so sad to wake her up.”
“Wouldn’t it be sad if a little kid like her gets cavities?”

When is the novel ending? It’s so unnecessarily long… not a single intimacy or connection just fighting and bickering from the beginning to end...
