Chapter 278
This surgeon was handsome and talented, and Jasmine felt Aveline shouldn’t miss out.
As the group was drinking, eating, and chatting, Xavier walked over.
There happened to be an empty seat next to Kyle, so Xavier pulled out the chair himself, sat down, and looked at Aveline,
“Are you enjoying the meal, Ms. Sutton?”
Aveline met his deep, dark eyes and replied coldly, “You don’t have to be so polite, Mr. Beltran. I’m flattered.”
Xavier glanced at the dessert on Aveline’s plate. “This strawberry dessert, you must really like it.”
Aveline liked strawberries, so of course she liked this strawberry dessert; she wouldn’t have taken it otherwise.
She figured Xavier hadn’t just come over to talk to her on a whim. It had to be because Josephine was here, and he was afraid she would get angry and leave, upsetting Rupert.
That’s why he’d come over to say a few nice things, trying to calm her down.
Aveline looked away coldly, not bothering with him anymore.
No matter how much she detested Josephine, she was well–mannered. She would never embarrass Rupert at his birthday banquet.
She was just glad her maternal grandparents hadn’t come.
Seeing her reaction, Xavier just smiled nonchalantly and took a sip of his wine.
Kyle, however, was stunned that Aveline was giving Xavier the cold shoulder, as if she held a grudge.
After all, Aveline was an architect hired by the, and Xavier was her big boss.
Xavier caught Kyle’s expression out of the corner of his eye, turned to him, and said lightly,
“Dr. Lewis, are you wondering why Ms. Sutton is giving me the cold shoulder?”

Xavier was so blunt, Kyle gave an awkward smile, unsure of how to answer him.
He couldn’t just say, “Yes, Aveline is definitely giving you a look, but who knows why.”
Xavier ignored Kyle’s awkwardness, looked at Aveline, and said flatly,

“Td also like to know why Aveline is always giving me the cold shoulder and isn’t polite when she speaks. If you’re unhappy with me, Aveline, you might as well just say it.”
Aveline shot Xavier a cold look, didn’t say a word, and went back to eating.
She silently cursed, “He’s got issues.”
He could have asked her to be direct sooner, or later, but no, he had to do it at Rupert’s birthday banquet, in front of a distinguished guest.
This Dr. Lewis wasn’t just an associate chief neurosurgeon; he came from a prominent family, with relatives in politics.
Jasmine and Julian exchanged a look, their expressions sour. They didn’t get why Xavier was picking a fight with Aveline right now.
Was it because Dr. Lewis was interested in Aveline, and Xavier couldn’t stand to see it?
Fiona, who couldn’t hold her temper, scoffed, “Mr. Beltran, could you stop playing dumb?”
Xavier ignored Fiona and kept his eyes on Aveline. He smiled faintly when he saw she was still focused on eating her strawberry dessert.
He turned to Kyle and said, “Dr. Lewis, didn’t you want to see the Alfred paintings that the Patriarch has in his collection?”
“Ah, yes.”
“Then let’s go.”
Saying that, Xavier stood up with his wine glass.
Kyle had to excuse himself to Aveline and the others, then followed Xavier.
Once they were gone, Fiona leaned close to Aveline. “Xavier is such a jerk. He can have all the fun he wants, but the moment you meet a new guy, he has to sabotage it, even though you’ve already told him you want a divorce.”
Aveline said calmly, “Whatever.”

Xavier led Kyle upstairs. On the stairs, Kyle glanced at Xavier’s cold expression and couldn’t resist asking.
“Xavier, I get the feeling you don’t want me and Aveline to get to know each other.”
Xavier gave him a cold glance. “She’s married.”
Kyle was stunned.
“Wait, if she’s married, why would Fiona introduce us?”
Xavier said coolly, “You’ll have to ask Laura about that.”
Kyle couldn’t believe it, wondering if Xavier was just messing with him.
“No way. You’re kidding, right?”
He really liked Aveline. Her looks, her figure, her whole vibe–she was exactly his type.
Besides, before Xavier showed up, they were having a great chat. He thought she was warm, with great taste and a good head on her shoulders.
In short, he liked everything about her.
Then Xavier showed up, and she instantly turned cold. It was obviously directed at Xavier.
“Do you two have some kind of history?”

When is the novel ending? It’s so unnecessarily long… not a single intimacy or connection just fighting and bickering from the beginning to end...
