Chapter 344

An hour later, the meeting was wrapping up. Simon was discussing the progress of building the on-site command center with the construction lead.

Xavier’s phone vibrated on the table with a call, and Aveline, thinking it was hers, instinctively glanced at it.

The screen showed the name Josephine.

Aveline coldly looked away.

Xavier frowned slightly, glanced at Aveline, and picked up his phone to decline the call.

Then he leaned closer to Aveline and said in a low voice, “I’ve really been keeping my distance from her.”

Aveline turned her face away, ignoring him, making it clear he shouldn’t talk to her.

Just then, the phone vibrated again. Aveline, assuming Josephine was persistent and calling back, glanced over with a smirk.

It was actually a text from Josephine.

Xavier saw the smirk on Aveline’s lips and found it jarring. He said, “I really have been keeping my distance. If she calls, I can’t stop her.”

Aveline glanced at him, pointed at the phone, and said, “You don’t mind, do you?”

Xavier understood she meant she wanted to look at his phone, so he said, “Of course not.

With that, he unlocked his phone and handed it to her.

Aveline took it, swiped to Josephine’s WhatsApp chat, and saw the message she had sent:

[Xav, are you busy?]

[Let’s have dinner tonight, okay? I have something important to tell you.]

Aveline did a few taps and blocked Josephine.

Then she looked at Xavier with a provocative smile and said, “Now that’s what I call keeping your

distance

“No need to thank me, Mr. Beltran. It was nothing.”

After saying that, she put his phone down and turned her face away.

Xavier had thought Aveline wanted his phone to see what Josephine had sent him, not expecting her only goal was to block her.

He gave a helpless smile. “As long as you’re happy.”

Mason had just been promoted, so he was full of enthusiasm for his job and had been paying close attention to his boss’s every move.

Seeing Mr. Beltran lean close to her to whisper and then hand her his own phone, he was so astonished his eyes went wide.

The weird thing was, she was clearly giving Mr. Beltran the cold shoulder and didn’t want to talk to him.

What was going on?

He looked over at Rebecca.

Rebecca also noticed the interaction between Mr. Beltran and Aveline, wondering to herself why Aveline was still taking Mr. Beltran’s phone when she’d already reminded her at noon.

That gesture seemed a bit too intimate.

But Aveline still looked like she couldn’t stand Mr. Beltran.

Seeing Kevin Harmon look over, Rebecca knew he found it strange too, so she could only give him an awkward smile with nothing to say.

Both of them remembered the lesson of Claude being transferred away from Mr. Beltran’s side, so neither dared to voice their suspicions, fearing they’d be accused of wildly guessing Mr. Beltran’s thoughts.

The meeting ended. Simon told Aveline they should have dinner together that evening, then asked Xavier if he wanted to stay.

Xavier glanced at his watch. It was past 4 o’clock. He said, “I have to get back to the city. I have a business dinner tonight.”

Hearing this, Aveline’s lips curved into a faint, mocking smile.

Xavier saw it and knew she mistakenly thought he was rushing back to the city to have dinner with Josephine, so he added

“It’s a business dinner. I can’t get out of it.”

“The project has started, so I’ll be coming here often from now on.’

He was looking at Aveline as he said this.

But Aveline assumed he was talking to Simon and didn’t look at him.

If he said it was a business dinner, then it was a business dinner. It’s not like she could follow him to verify it.

Besides, she didn’t care anymore.

The group left the conference room, and Aveline could feel Xavier’s tall, imposing figure following right behind her.

There were two elevators, one going up and one going down. Aveline, Jasmine, and Julian got into the one going up.

Xavier needed to go back to the city. He glanced at Aveline’s back as she walked into the elevator, then entered the one going down.

Simon was seeing him off, so he went in too.

As the elevator descended, Simon stole a glance at Xavier. His expression was cold, and Simon couldn’t tell if he was in a bad mood.
