Josephine said impatiently, “Dad, she’s not here for a social visit. She’s here for me and asked me to go out.”

“You should still invite her in for some tea.”

Courtney got impatient too. “Alright, alright. Josie, just go out and see what she wants to talk to you about.”

Josephine nodded and hurried out.

Jacob was confused. “What’s going on?”

Leona pulled Josephine aside and said, “I brought Bryan here. He’ll stay at your place for one night, and I’ll pick him up tomorrow morning to see the Patriarch.”

Josephine’s eyes widened in shock, and she glanced at the black van.

“Leo–Leona, how… how could you do this?”

Leona reassured her, “Don’t be scared. Xavier knows I brought Bryan back. He’ll definitely find out where I’m hiding him, so my only option is to hide Bryan at your house.”

“Your house is the one place Xavier would never think of.”

As she spoke, Leona thought her idea was brilliant and even smiled smugly.

But Josephine found that smile jarring and shook her head frantically. “No way, no way, Leona. Don’t get me in trou- ble. If Xav finds out I helped you, he’ll definitely be mad at me.”

Leona frowned. “What are you talking about? I brought Bryan back from abroad and I’m having him meet the Patri- arch. I’m helping you. How can you say I’m getting you in trouble?”

Josephine was startled and quickly explained, “No, that was just a slip of the tongue. What I mean is, I’m scared of Xav.”

“What’s there to be scared of? It’s not like you’re doing anything illegal.”
