She could only push him away with her hands while her feet struck out in frustration.
When Xavier noticed she wasn’t biting back, he let out a muffled chuckle and said softly, “Just lie down with me for a bit. You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.”
“Baby, tell me—what would it take for you to forgive me?” he asked, his voice tinged with hope.
Quickly, he added, “Anything but a divorce.”
Aveline, exhausted and unwilling to move, replied sharply, “I forgive you, but I want a divorce.”
Xavier scoffed, “So, you’re saying you don’t forgive me after all.”
“I can’t breathe, Xavier,” she snapped, her voice tight with frustration.
Tilting his head slightly, he teased, “Really? I don’t believe you.”
He then pressed a quick kiss to her lips and laughed softly. “See? You’re breathing just fine.”
Aveline froze, anger bubbling fiercely inside her.
Still smiling, Xavier asked, “Are you trying to get me to kiss you again?”
Before he could move closer, Aveline raised her hand and slapped him sharply across the face.
The sharp sound echoed through the quiet bedroom.
For a moment, Xavier was stunned, then he chuckled softly. “Wait—was that the first time you’ve ever hit me? Or has it happened before?”
Coldly, Aveline replied, “You asked for it.”
“Get off my bed,” he said, turning his face toward her, his dark eyes unreadable and intense.
Her heart clenched at the look in his eyes. After all, she had been with this man for years, engaged for one, and they had shared countless nights together.
She could recognize the desire burning in his gaze.
Pushing him hard, she snapped, “Get off me, you bastard.”
But Xavier leaned in, kissed her cheek gently, then pulled her closer, burying his face in the curve of her neck once more. His voice was low and raspy as he murmured, “Don’t be mad. If you don’t want this, I won’t do anything. I just haven’t held you in so long—I wanted to hold you.”
“You went to handle the property transfer, right? Are you tired? Just lie with me for a little while.”
Aveline, her face cold and determined, quickly stood up and kicked him sharply in the thigh while he was still on the floor.
“If you’re wrong, you have to face the consequences,” she said firmly.
Without waiting for a response, she grabbed her purse and walked out of the bedroom toward the study.
If she stayed in the room, Xavier would surely keep pestering her.
Xavier watched her disappear through the doorway, then slowly got up from the floor. He sat on the bed, rubbing his sore spots with a faint smile.
After a moment, he lay back down and drifted off to sleep again.
He had no idea how much time had passed when he finally woke up—it was already dark outside.
Glancing at his watch, he saw it was nearly eight o’clock.
He knew her maternal grandparents always ate dinner at seven. It was well past dinnertime. Why hadn’t Aveline woken him?
He rose, went to the bathroom to freshen up, then stepped out of the bedroom.

When is the novel ending? It’s so unnecessarily long… not a single intimacy or connection just fighting and bickering from the beginning to end...
