The moment Marcus caught her gaze, his heart constricted painfully in his chest, and a curse slipped through his mind, “Damn it.” Anxiety washed over him as he glanced at the others in the group. Rupert and Lauren wore expressions that were as unyielding as stone, their faces set in cold, somber lines. But it was Xavier who truly chilled him to the bone; his demeanor was so frigid, it felt as if he could freeze the very air around him. The contempt he held for Josephine was palpable, radiating from him like an icy wind, as if he were ready to unleash his fury upon someone.

Finally, when the unwelcome presence was ushered away, Lauren couldn’t suppress her disdain any longer. She muttered under her breath, “What bad luck.”

Rupert’s voice rumbled like distant thunder, “Let’s move on. We should go explore the scenic spots.”

With that, the group piled into their cars, the atmosphere thick with unspoken tension.

Mason, who was already in elementary school and a bit older than Lily, leaned in closer to her, his voice a conspiratorial whisper, “So Uncle really hates Aunt Josie.”

Lily, her big eyes wide with understanding, nodded earnestly. “Auntie really hates Aunt Josie, so Uncle hates her too.”

“But Aunt Leona likes her,” Mason pointed out innocently, his small brow furrowing in thought.

Their naive chatter hung in the air, a stark contrast to the heavy silence of the adults, who shifted uncomfortably.

Patrick, sensing the awkwardness, quickly scooped Lily up into his arms. “You little rascal, what do you know? Don’t speak nonsense.”

Marcus, equally flustered, swiftly pulled Mason into the car, trying to shield him from the adult world’s complexities.

As Xavier settled into the Baldwin family’s van, he cast a glance at Aveline, whose expression was as cold as the winter’s chill. “They’re gone,” he stated flatly, trying to break the oppressive silence.

Aveline’s reply was sharp, “How did she know we were here?”

Xavier could sense the accusation in her tone, as if she believed he was the one who had revealed their whereabouts to Josephine. He felt a surge of indignation. “I truly don’t know,” he protested, his voice tinged with frustration.

Collin, ever the peacemaker, interjected, “It was probably just a coincidence. Aveline, let it go. Don’t let her get to you.”

Eager to shift the conversation, Xavier quickly piped up, “Let’s head to the scenic spots. Grandpa and the others are already waiting in the car.”

Collin nodded, a determined look on his face. “Alright, let’s go have some fun. We came to Mount Ardwood to enjoy ourselves; we shouldn’t let someone trying to provoke us ruin our day.”

As they drove away, Xavier felt a wave of gratitude wash over him for the old man’s generosity, thankful for the distraction from the chaos that surrounded them.

Meanwhile, Josephine was driving away from the construction site, her expression grim as she pulled over to the side of the road. With a heavy heart, she retrieved her phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she dialed Marcus’s number.

Marjorie, observing the tension in Josephine, couldn’t help but voice her concern. “Josie, what happened between you and Mr. Beltran? How could he…”
