“Xavier is not someone to mess with, and neither am I, Marcus.”
The phone in his hand rang, and Marcus was so startled his hand shook, dropping it on the floor.
“Damn it!”
He cursed, bent down to pick up the phone, and saw it was a call from Josephine.
“Son of a bitch.”
He cursed again, then answered, “What the hell do you want?
Are you looking for trouble?”
Josephine replied, “You’re so fierce, brother–in–law. Are you threatening me?”
Marcus was furious. “You’re the one blackmailing me, get it straight.”
Josephine scoffed, “Brother–in–law, you promised you’d help my dad through his difficulties. You went back on your word, and now you’re twisting it to say I’m blackmailing you. Is this how you usually do business?”
Marcus said hatefully, “Xavier is blocking my project. I was originally planning to have your dad work with me on it, but that’s off the table now. You can’t blame me. Go find Xavier.”
“He’s
your brother–in–law too, and a real one at that.”
Josephine’s mood soured at the mention of Xavier’s name. “Don’t mention him to me. He already dumped me.”
Marcus got curious. “Were you ever actually with him?”
Josephine let out a cold laugh. “What do you think?”
“Don’t fucking keep saying ‘What do you think?‘ to me. If you want my opinion, stay away from me. If I had a project, I’d naturally think of your dad, but right now, I don’t.”
“Marcus, what do you mean, stay away from you? Are you trying to be like Xavier, use me and then dump me?”

Marcus’s heart skipped a beat. So, he thought, Xavier really did have a thing with her?
Damn it, Xavier was just pretending, making him think nothing happened. If he had known, he never would have touched Xavier’s woman.
“Marcus, come out and meet me. I want you to explain this to me face–to–face.”
“Are you crazy? I can’t get out.
“Hmph, you’re a grown man, who can stop you? Don’t play dumb with me. If you don’t come out, I’m calling Leona.”
Marcus replied, “Let’s talk when we’re back in the city.”
“I can’t wait. You have to see me tonight.‘
Marcus had a real headache and just wanted to end the call, so he placated her, “I know. I’ll see if I can get a chance to leave. If I can, I will.”
With that, he hung up the phone.
As a result, Josephine sent a text: [If you don’t come out to see me, you’re dead.]
“Damn it.”
Marcus cursed.
At that moment, Courtney opened the door and let Eileen into the hotel room.
Eileen looked around the room as she walked in and said, “Is Josie not here?
Your uncle is frantically looking for you two.‘

Courtney was startled. “Did you tell him I was here?”
Eileen turned to look at her. “No, I didn’t see him. My dad told me.”
“My dad asked if I knew where you and Josie were. I said I was at work and didn’t know.”
Courtney told her to sit down, then motioned for Hilda to pour Eileen some tea, and brought out fruit and snacks for her.
Eileen ate the snacks and drank her tea, asking, “You called me over because of the lawsuit, right? Is there any news from Gerald?”

When is the novel ending? It’s so unnecessarily long… not a single intimacy or connection just fighting and bickering from the beginning to end...
