Xavier replied, “Stay out of this. Someone might have been killed.”

Gerald was startled. “What do you mean? Who?”

“The police are investigating. I can’t tell you much. Just stay home.”

“Josephine is looking for you. I suggest you block her.”

Gerald got angry. “Can’t you just tell me what happened?

Is it that you don’t trust me anymore?”

Xavier said coolly, “Good. Stay home and sort out your feelings. You’ll meet a good girl in the future.”

Gerald swore and then hung up.

At midnight, Amy called. “Mr. Beltran, they dug it up. It’s Jacob. And there’s another person, Raymond.”

“Weren’t our men following Paul? He killed Raymond, and they didn’t know?”

Amy replied, “They didn’t dare get too close. They only knew Paul and Raymond were in the same car. Later, Paul drove that car out to the countryside again. Xavier’s face was grim as he walked over and pushed down on the door handle.

It opened. Aveline hadn’t locked it.

Xavier walked into the bedroom and over to the bed, looking at Aveline’s sleeping face in the light from the window.

He sighed, sat on the edge of the bed, and gently stroked Aveline’s face before calling out to her:

“Aveline, wake up. Aveline.”

He called her name a few times, and when she didn’t wake, he started shaking her gently.

Xavier didn’t know what Aveline was thinking, and he didn’t ask. He just gently stroked her back.

After some time, Xavier’s phone rang. Aveline flinched and then pushed him.

Xavier let her go and glanced at his phone. “It’s the police.”

He answered. The police told him they might have found Jacob and asked him and the family to come identify him.

Xavier asked, “Have you contacted his wife and second daughter?”

The police replied, “Someone will be sent to find them.”

Xavier hung up and looked at Aveline. “Are you coming with me to identify Jacob, or should I go alone?”
