Chapter 332

When he got back to the car, his stomach dropped. Nora was sobbing in the car and rocking back and forth Hurriedly, he unlocked the car and pulled his daughter into a hug.

“What’s wrong. Honey?” he asked. “Did something happen?”

“I thought that you left me.” Nora said between sobs that tore out of her throat.

As Stanley held his daughter closer, guilt began to cat away at him. He couldn’t believe that he left his intellectually disabled daughter in the car alone just so he could follow a thirty-year-old hunch and see the girl who looked eerily like his wife who died. He vowed to himself that from now on, he was going to put Nora first no matter what. But even as he was hugging her and whispering soothing words to Nora, he was thinking about Olivia and Polaris.

The strange meeting with Stanley soured the family of three’s visit like a cup full of lemons. They were silent as Polin and Olivia put groceries into the cart. Olivia didn’t even protest when her father took out his wallet to pay for the groceries.

DeAngelo’s big surprise even fell flat. He had paid someone to plant expensive flowers on his daughter’s balcony. Ava had let the gardeners into Olivia’s apartment when she had been gone at the train station. Olivia couldn’t even feel that relieved now that she had evidence her father wasn’t cheating on her mother as she stared at the yellow sunflowers, bright pink tulips, and orange zinnias she wanted to appreciate her father’s surprise more, but her mind was too full of thoughts of Stanley and why he seemed to be so obsessed with her family.

“You stay out here on the balcony with your father, sweetie,” her mom said and squeezed her shoulder. “That way, you can appreciate his gift.”

“What about the groceries? We can’t leave them out. We bought milk, cheese, and yogurt,” Olivia pointed out.

Polin waved her hand. “Don’t worry about that. I’ll put them away. You just stay here with your dad and take a moment to smell the flowers.”

Olivia tried to enjoy her father’s gift, but she kept glancing back into the kitchen area. An uneasy feeling was making her stomach queasy. Her anxiousness was only heightened when her mother got out her cell phone and shut the door behind her, sealing herself into the kitchen.

Her eyes widened as dread coursed through her. We’re Stanley and her mother having an affair? She tried to comfort herself by remembering that she had been wrong about her father having an affair just because he bought her flowers But her mother was acting much more suspicious than her father ever had. She didn’t want to think that her mother would be capable of something like that, but she couldn’t rule out any possibility.

Polin wasn’t on the phone with Stanley, though. She was talking to her mother, Angelina.

“Stanley knows, Mom,” Polin whispered into the phone as she paced nervously around her daughter’s kitchen. “He knows about Olivia. I saw the way that he was looking at her.

Angelina sighed. “You have to calm down, honey. You can’t think like that, or you’ll drive yourself crazy. We covered all of our bases. Stanley believed the death back then, and he still believes it now. Stanley is a rational man. He knows that the dead can not come back to life.”

“I didn’t like the way he was looking at Olivia,” Polin said and brushed her hair out of her face with a shaking hand. “Why was he at the store at the same time we were? Do you think he’s following us?”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions,” Angelina said. “We should just keep living our lives like normal, and if a problem arises, we will deal with it.”

After she got off the phone with her mother, the tension in Polin’s shoulders relaxed slightly. But she still couldn’t help but be worried that her daughter would be recognized by a member of the Cater family. She couldn’t even fathom the look on her daughter’s face if she found out that Polin had been lying to her for her entire life.

The rest of the day went by in a blur. Polin took her husband aside and explained the situation to him. DeAngelo’s heart nearly stopped beating when he found out who the creepy man in the grocery store was. He couldn’t stand the thought of his daughter knowing that Polin and him had lied to her.

Oblivious to her parents’ conversation, Olivia was in the kitchen humming and preparing a large meal for her parents for dinner. She had also invited Ava. This was her way of thanking her parents and her best friend for being there for her during her messy divorce.

She didn’t know what she would do without her supportive, loving parents.
