My mother and father offered to help me in the kitchen prepare dinner, but I told them to relax since they had spent most of the day on a stuffy train.

I had a good time making them a fun cocktail consisting of gin, limoncello, blood orange juice, crushed strawberries, and I even cut an orange and twisted the peel to put on the rim of the glass. Both of them praised my bartending abilities and said that it was the most delicious drink that they ever had.

I blushed with pleasure when they told me that. Even though I knew that they were just being kind because I was their daughter, it was still nice to be complimented. I spent most of the early evening preparing an elaborate dinner. Five minutes before Ava was supposed to arrive, I stood back from my dining room table and admired my hard work.

Since this dinner was a way to express my gratitude to my parents and Ava, I had used my good china. The porcelain was shiny, and I had even buffed my silverware so that it looked brand new. My wooden table was groaning under the weight of the many dishes that I prepared. The star of the show was the pork roast I had slow cooked in the oven. I topped it with roasted pecans and cranberries.

The smell from my homemade whipped mashed potatoes was making my mouth water. I also made asparagus wrapped with bacon, maple glazed carrots, chicken potpie with a perfectly baked crust, cucumber salad with homemade balsamic dressing, and macaroni and cheese.

I didn’t have time to make dessert, but I had picked out a key lime pie from the grocery store while my dad wasn’t looking. I was eager to see his face when I brought it out. Key lime pie was his favorite sweet treat.

When I deemed the table ready, I went to my room to change into a long, flowy pink sundress. I kept my makeup minimal, only applying blush, mascara, and a little concealer. I didn’t have anyone to impress tonight since it would just be my parents and Ava.

As I walked out of my bedroom, I noticed that my mom and dad were at my front door. Ava must have arrived already. Excitement rose inside me at the thought of seeing my best friend, but as I neared the door, I froze in my tracks.

He looked devastatingly handsome in a black polo shirt and black slacks. The all black look really worked for him since he already had dark features, and it looked sexy against his pale skin. My boyfriend had his hands in his pockets, and he was staring at me with a knowing smirk on his full lips. He knew that his presence would affect me. The beautiful bastard was enjoying my discomfort

“Is this your boyfriend, Ava?” my mother asked, gesturing to Alexander.

Jealousy ripped through me at just the thought. Alexander must have read the emotion in my eyes because his smile widened even more.

Ava snorted and moved away from Alexander, shuffling to the other side. I smiled at my friend’s loyalty

“No. he’s not my boyfriend,” she said. “This is Alexander Green, Olivia’s new boss.”

I bit my lip. On one hand, I was glad that Ava hadn’t introduced Alexander as my boyfriend, which I honestly wouldn’t put past her. But I was also wondering how in the hell I was going to explain the close dynamic I had with Alexander to my parents. Why did he have to show up tonight? I was hoping for a calming night with my parents and best friend.

My mother shot me a confused look, and my dad was staring at Alexander like he was sizing him up. I needed to defuse the situation before it got out of control. Quickly, I gestured Ava into my apartment and told her and my parents to talk amongst themselves so that I could see what my boss wanted.

As soon as the apartment door shut behind us, I turned to Alexander with a stern expression. “What are you doing here?” I demanded and put my hands on my hips.

Alexander smirked, and his gorgeous smile made my hand shake slightly. But right now, I needed to stay strong and not be distracted by my attraction to him.

“Aren’t you happy to see me?” he asked and wound his warm arms around my waist.

Automatically, I relaxed into him. The next second, I remembered that Ava had introduced Alexander to my parents as my boss. It wouldn’t look good if they found me hugging him in the hallway.

“Ava invited me,” he explained. “She thought that I would want to meet your parents and she thought that since this dinner was a way of showing gratitude that I deserved an invite since I had been helpful to you with the whole Chloe situation.”

My stomach churned with anger and annoyance toward Ava and Alexander. Since my parents were here, they should have checked with me before changing the guest list from four to five. But the more I thought about it, I had to accept the fact that Alexander did deserve to be here. Despite being a busy billionaire with an entire company to run, he had spent a lot of his free time and resources helping Ava and me put Chloe where she belonged.

We couldn’t have done it without him. Hell, Chloe had been so hellbent on hurting me, I could be dead right now if it wasn’t for Alexander’s help.
