Once the main course was finished, Ava helped me clear the table. We loaded the dishwasher as the three of them kept talking. Just as I was bringing out the key lime pie to surprise my dad, someone knocked on my door.

Ava looked at me with confusion in her eyes. Carefully, I set the pie down on the table and shrugged. I hadn’t invited anyone else tonight.

But then the strangest thing happened. My mother’s eyes widened. She slapped her forehead and then stood from the table, rushing toward my front door.

She opened the door to reveal a pretty middle-aged woman wearing a cream-colored blouse and black slacks.

“Everyone, this is Skylar Keller,” my mom said and gestured to the woman.

I froze where I was standing. I had no idea that my mom had any friends in New York. And why would she invite someone to my apartment without telling me?

I looked to my mom for an explanation, but she was purposely avoiding my questioning gaze.

Skylar’s eyes swept the room, and when she noticed Alexander sitting at the table, the smile fell from her face.

My blood turned cold. Did these two have a history? This night just kept getting more complicated by the second.

Guilt made her queasy. She knew that she shouldn’t have invited Skylar over without her daughter’s permission, especially because Olivia had spent all afternoon cooking a special meal.

But this was the only night that her old coworker, Skylar, could come over. Polin didn’t want to check with her daughter before she invited Skylar over to her apartment because she was scared that Olivia would’ve said no. Most of the time, Polin went with the motto ask for forgiveness, not permission.

“Everyone, this is my old coworker, turned friend Skylar,” Polin announced to the room.

Olivia’s eyes widened. Now, she recognized the red-haired woman standing in front of her. Skylar was Aidyn’s mother. Olivia had known Aidyn since they were kids. He had always had a crush on her, but Olivia had always considered him as just a friend. Aidyn was now a successful doctor with a thriving practice in the city.

A lightbulb went off over Olivia’s head as she realized why her mother had invited Skylar to her apartment. She put her hands on her hips as her stomach swooped. Olivia prayed that Skylar hadn’t brought her son along. Alexander wasn’t above making a scene if he got jealous.

As if this night wasn’t already complicated enough, things just kept going downhill. It felt like this night was a stack of precariously placed books. If someone put one more book on top of the pile, everything would come crashing down.

Skylar smiled at Olivia. The girl that she had once known had blossomed into a lovely young woman. She had always been fond of Olivia and hoped that one day, her son would capture Olivia’s heart. Aidyn was so disappointed when Olivia had gotten married at a young age. But two weeks ago, Aidyn had called his mother and told her that Olivia had gotten divorced. He had hoped that when the dust settled, his mother-who was friends with Olivia’s mom—could set up a meeting between them. Skylar agreed straight away.

But as Skylar gazed around the room, her smile faltered when she caught sight of Alexander Green. Automatically, she took a step back, and her hands clenched into tight fists. Her lips turned down into a disapproving frown as she looked at his handsome face.

Of course, she knew of the Green family. It was almost impossible to live in New York and not at least know of one of the richest families in the world. Hell, just the other day, Skylar had been flipping through a magazine while sitting in the dentist waiting room, and there had been a picture of Alexander. The magazine had labeled him one of the most eligible bachelors in the world.

Skylar silently swore. If Alexander Green had already won Olivia’s affections, her son didn’t have any chance. Aidyn might be a successful doctor, but Alexander could make the young woman’s wildest dreams come true.

Polin sensed her friend’s hesitation because of the handsome man’s presence. “Alexandar is Olivia’s boss,” she hastily explained. “She wanted to invite him over for dinner tonight because he has helped her out of some tight spots in the past.”
