Chapter 356

Immediately, my heart started to race, and anticipation curled low in my belly. What did he have

in mind?

He stood in front of me and leaned against his desk. His expression was still closed off, so I couldn’t tell where his head was at. Why have you become so distant from me since the other night?he murmured.

My palms began to sweat. Um, I don’t know what you’re talking about,I lied, praying that denial would work.

He gave me a look. Come on, Olivia. Yes, you do.

I sighed and then stood on shaking legs. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and pressed my lips to his, slipping my tongue into his warm mouth. He kissed me back, but I could tell that his heart wasn’t in it.

When I pulled away, his face was set in determination. My stomach dropped when I realized he wasn’t going to be distracted by my body.

Why do you care?I said, thinking about how his mom was probably setting him up with his ex- girlfriend. Isn’t this thing between us temporary?

I had to force those words out of my mouth. It felt like I was swallowing razor blades from the pain they caused me.

Alexander’s brow furrowed, and then his eyes turned cold. Temporary?he growled.

We’re at work,I reminded him. “There is no usat work. I refuse to talk about this right now with you.

I turned to leave but paused midstep when Alexander let out an angry scoff. Why do you pretend like

you don’t feel yourself falling for me, too? Why are you running away from something real?

I swallowed past the sudden lump in my throat. I almost turned back, but I needed to stand my ground. I couldn’t have this kind of conversation with him at work. It would set a bad precedent. I needed to draw the line somewhere.

So, I remained quiet, opened the door, and left his office.

For the rest of the day, Alexander and I only talked about work. Since I was the lead assistant, I was in and out of his office all day, but I made sure to keep things professional. There was definitely an undercurrent of energy running between us, though. It was always there. From the look on Alexander’s face when I entered his office, I knew that he could feel it, too.

As the work day drew to a close, Alexander told Gai and I that we needed to join him at a work dinner. We piled into his carI made sure to sit in the backseat to avoid any awkwardnessand Alexander drove us to a fancy hibachi restaurant.

The restaurant was one of those places that cooked your meal in front of you. As soon as I entered, I immediately became overstimulated. The restaurant was filled with laughter and the babble of loud voices that made it clear most of the people in here were already drunk. We sat at a table full of men in suits that ordered us all sake.
