Damnit!

I couldn’t find my pepper spray, and now I had no way of defending myself from the creep. My heart slammed against my chest as I neared the stranger, wondering if I should turn around and run away. But if I started running, the man would probably chase me.

My blood heated as I wondered if that was how he got off. Did he like running after women?

The man turned his face toward the streetlight, and my shoulders slumped in relief when I saw who it was.

Alexander.

“You scared the crap out of me!” I accused him.

He ignored my comment. His stance was casual, his arms crossed, and he leaned against the tree. But there was an intense emotion brewing in his eyes that I couldn’t decipher. Alexander’s dark eyes trailed almost lazily down my body, and I shivered under his gaze.

“Have you sobered up?” He asked and nodded at my shopping bags. “It appears that you were well enough to have a shopping spree.”

I rolled my eyes at his sarcastic tone. “Yes, I feel fine,” I answered. That wasn’t exactly the truth since my mouth was still full of a bitter taste, and my head was pounding from a headache, but what he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him. “I might get drunk fast, but I always sober up just as quickly.”

That was true, at least.

Alexander chuckled, and I shifted as an uneasy feeling curled low in my belly. I couldn’t tell whether he was making fun of me or not.

After that, we fell into an uncomfortable silence. Usually, our silences weren’t so awkward, but the air between us was filled with things left unsaid. But I wasn’t sure how to say the things I wanted. I wasn’t even sure what those things were.

It would be easier to get my thoughts in order if Alexander’s eyes weren’t boring into mine. It seemed like he was looking past the facade. I showed the world and into my very soul. The feeling unsettled me.

“Did you

wait for me to get home?” I asked just to fill the silence.

“No,” Alexander answered. “I’m actually just getting home myself.”

Jealousy thrummed through me. Who had he been out with? But the better question was, did I even have the right to be jealous? Hadn’t I made it clear that this thing between us was casual?

“Well, I should really go put my shopping away,” I said after another moment of quiet. Why wasn’t he saying anything? “I’ll see you tomorrow. I’m actually going to sleep at my parents‘ house tonight.”

That made him finally speak up. He laid his hand on my shoulder as I brushed past him. The heat coming off his body made my legs tremble, and for a moment, I was terrified that I was going to pass out. Maybe I could blame it on the alcohol if I fainted, but we would both know it would be because his presence had overwhelmed me.

Alexander wrapped me in his arms and crushed me against his hard body.

I gasped in surprise and dropped my shopping bags.

“What are you doing!” I shrieked.

He cupped my face in his warm hands, and when his hard gaze met mine, all of my rational thoughts flew out of my head.

“Don’t go to your parents‘ house tonight,” he pleaded. “It’s too late to make that long drive. Please.”

His insistence shocked me. I didn’t know how to respond to him.

“Come with me for a walk,” he offered and took both of my hands in his strong grasp. “It’s a nice night for a moonlit walk.”

I looked up at the bright moon. A thrill went down my spine when I saw that it was a full moon. The possibilities were endless when it was a full moon. Something really good could happen…or really bad.

I wasn’t willing to take the risk. I stepped away from Alexander and picked up my shopping bags.

“No. I’m going upstairs to take a shower and then go to my parents’ house. Goodnight, Alexander.”

After I looked once more into his dark, bottomless eyes, I turned away from him.
