Chapter 364
Alexander’s lips twitched. “Probably. But I’m not making any promises.”
I tried to hold in my chuckle on principle alone, but I couldn’t resist the way Alexander was looking at me with humor in his eyes. At that moment, he reminded me of a schoolboy.
“Alright, I’ll come,” I finally said after keeping him on edge for several moments. The smile that crossed his face when I agreed to come made my heart race. “But I’ll only go for half an hour.” I made my voice stern and pointed a finger in his face.
He held his hands up in surrender. “That’s all I ask.”
After I stashed my shopping bags in my apartment, we set off for our moonlit stroll. I looked up at the full moon as we walked the sidewalk. I wasn’t superstitious, but I did believe in the power of the moon. It was merely scientific. The moon controlled the tides, and when a full moon was high in the sky, it changed the way people acted. Everyone’s inhibitions were lowered. In high school, my friend’s mother was an ER nurse, and she would tell us that every full moon, the emergency room was packed with accidents.
That thought made a chill go down my spine as Alexander walked right beside me, his warmth making my hands shake. What would happen during this full moon?
We walked to an empty playground, complete with monkey bars, a seesaw, a slide, and two pairs of swings.
“Swinging was my favorite as a kid,” I told Alexander. “I never wanted to get off of it during recess to let other kids have a turn.‘
Alexander chuckled. “Get on,” he said and gestured to the swings. “I’ll push you.”
I smiled, and nostalgia flowed through me as I sat on the swing.
I shivered when he put his hands on the metal chains attached to the seat. The front of his body was pressed against mine, and my throat dried as desire coursed through me. The cold night wind hit
my face as he pushed me higher and higher into the air. My hair whipped around, tickling my cheeks. Initially, I’d been afraid of the swing making me sick since my stomach was still a little queasy. But the cold rush of air on my cheeks was exactly what I needed to clear my head of the brain fog that I’ve had since I’d gotten drunk.
Eventually, Alexander took a seat on the swing next to me, and we allowed our swings to sway

gently from side to side.
“I know that Jess contacted you,” he said out of nowhere.
My stomach stiffened, and I sat frozen in silence for a long time.
“Yes…she did,” I said cautiously, unsure of where he was going with this.

“You know who Jess is, right?” he asked as he looked off into the distance instead of me.
“Your crazy ex–girlfriend,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Yes,” he agreed and frowned. “She is.” Alexander paused, and an angry look crossed his face. “I’m pretty sure it was my mother who invited her back.”
My hands clenched into tight fists. Even though I had expected this, it still made me angry to know that Alexander’s mother was praying for the downfall of our relationship.
“I made it clear to my mom that if Jess even comes near you, that I will ruin both of them,” he said in a low, dangerous voice. “I will not play around with your safety. Especially after what you went through with Chloe.”
My heart warmed. I couldn’t help but feel touched at the protective edge in his voice.
