I packed a suitcase with all of my essentials and a few changes of clothes. Then, I loaded up my car, and I was on the road. At night, the drive was a lot quicker since there were fewer cars on the road, especially when I got out of the city.

The tightness in my chest loosened when I pulled up in their driveway. With my bag slung over my shoulder, I used their spare key they hid under a fake rock by the front door to get in. Earlier today, when I was cooking with my mom, I told her I would probably be back tonight, so I hoped I wouldn’t scare my parents.

In the guest bathroom, I stripped off my rumpled clothing that smelled like Alexander. I took a quick shower, but no matter how hard I scrubbed, I couldn’t get the smell of the woods and the campfire scent that always reminded me of Alexander.

When I crawled into the guest bed, I immediately fell asleep, my exhaustion rolling over me like a tidal wave. It only felt like a second later, when my eyes flew open again. But at least a few hours must have passed because the morning sun was shining through my window.

I tried to go back to sleep, but then I heard the noises that must have originally woken me up. The clattering of pans, the quiet murmurs of my parents floating from downstairs, and–the best smell of all–freshly brewed coffee.

I dragged myself out of bed. After using the bathroom, I stared at the dark circles under my eyes. My hair was a mess, and there were tiny flecks of mascara on my cheeks, but I didn’t have the energy to fix myself before I had a cup of coffee. Besides, it was just my parents down there.

“Good morning, honey,” my mom said from her seat at the kitchen island. She folded her newspaper and took a sip of coffee.

“We saw your car in the driveway,” my dad explained from his spot at the stove. “I’m so happy you decided to visit us.”

“I might be staying a few nights here if that’s alright,” I said as I poured myself a cup of coffee.

My mother beamed. “Of course it is! Will you be home for dinner after work today?”

I was about to say yes, but then I saw the innocent look in my mom’s eyes. She seemed almost… too innocent. Warning bells rang in my head. Was she trying to set me up with Aidyn again? Even though I wanted to spend time with my parents, I didn’t want to risk having to endure a whole dinner with Aidyn. It was bad enough that things were already so complicated with

“No, mom, I’m sorry,” I answered. “I have to work later tonight, so I don’t think I’ll be able to make it in time for dinner.”

As I loaded my plate with scrambled eggs, bacon, and buttered toast, I wondered how my dating life had gotten this complicated.

Well, I guess there were worse problems to have.

But my mother didn’t let my refusal hinder her plans.

“Well, what about Friday or Saturday? Surely you don’t have to work late on the weekends,” my mom pressed.

“I’m actually going to a networking event with Rose and Ava on Friday,” I said, thankful that I had an actual excuse ready, and I didn’t have to lie. “Then, on Saturday I’m traveling for work.”

My mother clucked her tongue and looked to my father for help.
