Chapter 369
My mother set her newspaper down and leveled me with a stare. “Do you think that’s the best idea, sweetheart?”
The bite of egg I just put in my mouth turned to sawdust. Painfully, I swallowed my food and set down my fork. I knew that my parents had noticed the chemistry between Alexander and me when they were over at my house. They were probably trying to find out a way to persuade me into getting a different job.
But I was already in too deep. I’d already slept with my boss many times. Things were so complicated in my life that I felt like a spinning top that was out of control. Part of me wanted to confess everything to my parents, but I didn’t dare say anything. I loved them, but my mom and dad were traditional. They didn’t believe in sex before marriage. I was terrified that they would kick me out of the house if I revealed the truth. And right now, their house was my only safe
haven.
“Everything will be fine,” I assured my mom and took a sip of my coffee. “I’ve been on a trip with Alexander before. It’s a good experience and a networking opportunity, too.”
Even though I’d only finished half of my meal, I stood from my seat and scraped the rest of my breakfast into the garbage disposal. I’d lost my appetite.
“I have to get dressed for work,” I said without looking at my parents and then escaped upstairs.
As I was walking up the stairs, someone knocked on the door. My hands tightened on the stairs banister. Would Alexander be bold enough to come to my parents‘ house? I ran to the top of the stairs but kept my eye on the front door. Strangely, neither my mother nor father answered the door even though I’m sure they both heard it.
Back in my room, I chose a light blue blouse, white skirt, and white flats to wear. I didn’t have time to do much with my hair, so I twisted it into a knot. I kept my makeup simple, only adding mascara and some blush.
Downstairs, my parents were in the exact same places I left them.
“How come neither of you answered the door earlier?” I asked as I poured a cup of coffee in a travel mug to take with me to work.
My mother avoided my curious gaze. “Oh, it was just a salesman. He was here yesterday, too.”

Suspicion crept down my spine like a spider. Neither of them had gotten up to see who had been outside the door, so how would my mother know it was a salesman? I was pretty sure they didn’t have cameras.
But I didn’t have time to question my parents more on their weird behavior. I needed to leave for work. After collecting my purse, I kissed my mother on the cheek and hugged my dad.
To my utter shock, when I opened the door, a man was standing on the porch. It took me a moment to recognize Stanley–Nors’s father. Alexander’s dad’s business partner and the man who claimed to know my mother. The fact that my mother didn’t open the door now was even more suspicious to me. Was it true that there was history between my mother and Stanley? Was that why my mom was avoiding him?
“Oh…hello,” Olivia said awkwardly.
Stanley’s eyes brightened as he gazed at me. “Hi, Olivia!” he said in a cheerful voice. “It’s great to see you. I’ve come to visit your mother. I wanted to help jog her memory. I know that she’s the girl who I spent most of my childhood with. Can you please go get Polaris for me?”
I narrowed my eyes. “Her name is Polin,” I said through gritted teeth.
