Why didn’t my mom want me to hear the conversation? I also didn’t feel right about leaving my mother alone with Stanley. I didn’t know the man well enough, and I definitely didn’t like how he seemed to be so obsessed with my mom. At least my dad was home. He wouldn’t let this anything to mom.

“Honey, go ahead and leave for work,” my mom said, gently pushing me down the porch stairs.

“No, I want to stay,” I said firmly and stepped to the side so that she would stop trying to push me. “I’m a good employee that never takes a day off.” I took out my phone and called Alexander. Usually, I would step away when I had to make a phone call, but I didn’t want to leave Stanley and my mother alone, even for a second. “Hi, Mr. Green,” I said when he answered the phone. “I have a guest at my house, and I’m going to be in a little later than usual.”

The other side of the line was silent for so long that I was worried that he had hung up. But when I pulled the phone away from my ear and looked at the display, it was still on the call.

“Who’s your visitor?” he asked in a low, dangerous voice.

I didn’t want to lie because my mom and Stanley could hear me.

“Mr. Cater,” I answered.

Since Alexander knew Stanley, he seemed to relax a little bit. “Alright,” he grumbled. “I’ll see you in the office later.”

“Yes, you will,” I agreed.

But I was slightly afraid of how the rest of the day was going to go. I looked down at Stanley’s gift for my mother, that I was still holding. What was in the box? Why did this cheerfully wrapped present seem so nefarious? Would my father fight Stanley if the man stepped out of line? I just couldn’t imagine mild mannered Mr. Cater creating a scene.

From the awestruck way he was staring between my mother and me, I started to think that Stanley was capable of just about anything. A shiver of fear went down my spine as I invited him into the

house.

I hoped I wasn’t about to make a big mistake.

As Stanley stepped into the house, he smiled at Olivia. “Telling your boyfriend not to miss you too much?” he teased her.

Stanley wasn’t trying to expose Olivia’s secret since he wasn’t aware that Polin didn’t know about Alexander and Olivia’s relationship. He was merely trying to make conversation.

But Olivia froze, the back of her neck heating. Immediately, she began to freak out. She couldn’t believe that Stanley had just said that. Slowly, she turned to her mom, bracing herself for her

reaction.

Polin’s eyes were calculated as she stared at her daughter, as if what Stanley had just revealed confirmed her worst fears. Before her mom could reach her own conclusions, she jumped to save the situation.

“No, that was my boss,” she told Stanley firmly. “I was telling him that I would be late. I don’t have a boyfriend, Mr. Cater.”

His cheeks flushed. “Call me Stanley.”

Properly chastised, Stanley followed Olivia and Polin through the entryway.

“So, how has your trip to New York been?” Olivia asked in an effort to change the subject and smooth over the awkward silence. “How’s Nora?”

Stanley smiled when he heard his daughter’s name, which warmed Olivia’s heart. Maybe she had judged him too quickly. Maybe he wasn’t a bad guy. He just came on a little too strong.
