## Chapter 24: They Can Get Married, and They Can Get Divorced Too
“Mr. Lewis, don’t let it get to you. Women are a dime a dozen for you.”
“Mr. Lewis, today’s wedding was quite the spectacle. Your uncle and his new wife seem to have a pretty good thing going.”
“Mr. Lewis, I heard you have a good relationship with your aunt. Could you introduce us sometime?”
“Mr. Lewis…”
*CRASH!* Ryan Lewis grabbed his phone and slammed it against the heavy bookshelf. Trophies and
certificates came tumbling down, shattering and scattering across the floor like they were mocking his
current pathetic state.
What good was being excellent if he still had to be overshadowed by Camren Lewis, still had to kneel and
serve tea to Britney Simpson?
Britney Simpson…
Didn’t she love him the most? Just because he staged a fake wedding for Skylar Simpson, she turned so
cold, so heartless, and married Camren Lewis?
How could she do this to him? Didn’t she say she’d do anything for him? She worked so hard just to stand by
his side…
Why did she betray him like this?
“Britney Simpson, why are you doing this to me? Why won’t you just give me one more chance?”
“Why?” Ryan chugged the remaining wine straight from the bottle, then flung it away.
*BANG…*
The bottle smashed against the half–open study door, startling Skylar Simpson, who was behind it. She scrambled back a few steps, then dared to peek through the crack in the door.
Ryan’s wedding suit jacket was already on the floor, covered in shattered glass. A few buttons on his white shirt were undone, revealing skin flushed red from drink.
He sat there on the messy floor, one leg stretched out listlessly, the other bent with his arm draped over it.
A cut, fresh and bleeding, ran across his drooping hand, the crimson liquid trickling down his long fingers. It was a side of Ryan Skylar had never seen–disheveled, broken, weak, and utterly helpless.
Skylar’s expression was hard to read. She had gotten her wish today and married Ryan, but the grand, admired ceremony she’d envisioned never happened. Instead, she’d faced the ultimate humiliation.

Only then did she truly realize just how insignificant Ryan was. In front of Camren Lewis, he was nothing but a cowering minnow.
Skylar felt a bitter resentment. How could Britney, a crippled girl, end up in Camren Lewis’s bed while she, after all her elaborate schemes, was left alone in an empty room?
Ryan hadn’t even bothered to look at her since he got back.
Listening to him murmur Britney’s name, Skylar felt as if countless needles were repeatedly piercing her
heart.
Skylar forced herself to calm the jealousy and fury brewing inside her. She put on a look of humble resignation and pushed open the study door. “Ryan…”
“Get out!” Ryan hurled another wine bottle. The half–empty red wine exploded in front of Skylar, splattering
onto her white silk slip dress.
The wine dripped down her long hair, a picture of disarray, yet unexpectedly alluring. Usually, this look would
instantly spark a primal reaction in him, but right now, he just didn’t want to see Skylar.
Skylar stifled a scream and walked over to Ryan. Her moist eyes looked unusually soft. “Please don’t be like
this, okay?”
“Isn’t this exactly what you wanted to see?” Ryan sneered. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. Britney
Simpson must have left the Simpson family weeks ago, right?”
“Whose hands is her phone in? Yours, or Allison Payne’s?”
“You want to force my hand? You want to marry into the Lewis family?” Ryan had seen plenty of dirty tricks in
their circle, but he never expected to be the one on the receiving end.
Skylar shook her head, feigning shock, large tears rolling from her eyes with her movements. “How could you
think that of me?”
“I never wanted to force you, really,” Skylar said, her eyes brimming with tears. “It was–Britney had a huge
fight with Dad and Mom. She said we wronged her and that she’d get revenge on all of us.”
“We never thought she’d just turn around and marry Camren Lewis. I truly had no idea.”
Skylar’s trembling hand reached out to touch Ryan, but he roughly shoved her away. She collapsed weakly to the floor, her palm conveniently brushing against a sharp shard of glass. “I just wanted to use Britney’s name to get through this wedding with you, and then, once she cooled down and came back, she could still be with you.”
“Skylar Simpson, you honestly think I’d buy that?” Ryan pinched Skylar’s chin.
“Yes, I admit I was selfish.” Skylar’s chin distorted under his grip; she could almost hear the bone grinding. She clenched her hands. “I wanted to stand by your side and receive everyone’s blessings. Even if this

wedding wasn’t meant for me, I just wanted to indulge in a dream for myself. Is that so wrong?”
“You know, I never wanted to compete with Britney. I know I’m just an adopted daughter, I have no right, and I know you love her, not me.”
Skylar knew exactly how to manipulate a man’s heart. Her tears, like pearls from a broken string, fell onto Ryan’s veined hands.
“I’ll help you.”
“Help me?” Ryan’s eyes were bloodshot. “She’s already married to Camren Lewis. She’s my aunt now. How
exactly are you going to help me?”
“It’s all because of you!” Ryan suddenly remembered. All of Britney’s changes had started after she walked in
on him and Skylar. “If it weren’t for you, she never would’ve left me.”
“Things never would have turned out this way.”
“Ryan, don’t you get it?” The more physical pain Skylar felt, the deeper her hatred for Britney grew.
Britney wasn’t good enough for all the nice things; she deserved to be trodden underfoot.
