## Chapter 7: Held Me All Night?
Britney’s eyes held a mix of confusion and a faint unease, like a lost little animal desperately seeking a way home, only able to blink with wide, wet eyes, silently pleading for help.
Camren’s long, slender fingers gently wiped away the dampness from her eyes. His voice was softer than she’d ever heard it. “Just get some good sleep, and you’ll be okay.”
I’ll stay with you.”
Britney blinked, as if processing his words – what did he mean?
Camren’s large hand covered her eyes. “Sleep now.”
Maybe it was the momentary coolness from his palm, or perhaps Britney had understood him, or maybe she was just utterly exhausted. She instinctively rubbed her cheek against the back of his hand, then closed her eyes again.
Camren’s throat moved slightly. It took him a long moment to pull his hand away.
Britney frowned, stirring restlessly as if in protest. Finally, she unconsciously snuggled against his chest, then went completely still.
Camren didn’t say a word, only wrapped her tighter in the blanket, holding her close.
By the time Britney woke up, it was already ten in the morning the next day. She felt a strange tightness in her throat and completely drained of energy.
She had a dream, she thought a hazy, muddled dream. But someone had been there throughout, softly soothing her.
It was a very peculiar feeling.
After a quick tidy–up, Britney left her room. Before she even made it downstairs, she heard Camren’s voice.
“Toss them.“
Following the sound, she saw several people standing in the living room. In their hands were…
The wedding dress and jewelry she had tried on before?
Old Mr. Lewis probably knew about her and Camren, so he had sent the items over. But why was Camren
telling them to throw them out?
“Wait!” Britney rushed down the stairs.
Camren’s gaze landed on her, scanning her up and down. “How do you feel?”
How did she feel about what?
Britney frowned. Was he asking her how she slept?
She wasn’t one to have trouble sleeping in a new bed. “I slept pretty well, actually. I’m quite used to it.”
Camren’s lips curved into an almost imperceptible smile, then quickly returned to normal. “That’s good.”
“Are you really throwing these out?” Britney’s attention drifted back to the items. “Grandpa Lewis said we didn’t need to change any of this stuff. And the wedding, too we don’t need to….”
–
Camren stood up and walked over to Britney. He raised a hand and gently touched her left ear, sending a pleasant shiver through her whole body.
Britney’s tongue felt completely tied, and she couldn’t for the life of her remember what she was about to say.
“Do you like these?” Camren asked.
“What?” Britney felt like she was, once again, a step behind Camren’s train of thought.
“Grandpa Lewis and… had these specially made for the wedding. They’re very exquisite, and very expensive.”
“So? Do you like them?” Camren released her ear, patiently waiting for Britney’s answer.
Hearing his words, Britney’s gaze fell on the wedding dress, which was being held with extreme care.
Did she like it? She supposed she did.
But what she truly liked was the meaning behind the dress and the jewelry – the beautiful future she
envisioned with Ryan as they started their own family.
As for the actual dress and jewelry themselves…
She realized she had never genuinely thought about whether she truly liked them.
All she knew was that Grandpa Lewis said these items were carefully selected, Ryan said they were fitting for their status, and her family said they showed how much the Lewis family valued her.
Did she like them? It seemed no one had ever really asked her that.
Seeing her expression, Camren waved his hand, signaling for the people to take the items away. “You don’t have to worry about the previous wedding, or anything that was prepared for it.”
“But for your wedding with me, there’s one thing you need to care about.”
“What’s that?”
“Whether you like it or not.” Camren met Britney’s eyes. “The wedding dress, the jewelry, the venue decorations even the guests they can all be chosen according to your preferences.”
Britney’s eyes flickered. It felt like Camren’s words had pried open a tiny crack in something deep within her
heart.
She looked at Camren, playfully saying, “What if I don’t want to invite a single quest?”
“That’s fine.” Camren replied without a trace of hesitation.
“And not bow to the elders?”
“That’s also fine.”
Camren’s firm affirmations made Britney temporarily forget how to react. “Mr. Lewis…”
“What did you call me?”
“Huh?” Britney seemed to have gotten used to spacing out around Camren. “Mr. Lewis?”
The man’s eyes darkened. Clearly, that wasn’t the right answer.
“Uncle?”
His eyes deepened even more. That answer wasn’t quite right either, so….
“We’re married,” Camren reminded her. “Do you need to see our marriage certificate?”
Britney snapped back to reality. Right, they were married. It definitely felt weird to call him something so formal. But counting yesterday, they hadn’t even met five times. She really couldn’t bring herself to use a more intimate address.
She tentatively offered, “Then, Camren?”
The color in the man’s eyes softened a bit, though it was clear this address was just barely passable. Britney secretly breathed a sigh of relief that he didn’t continue to dwell on the name issue.
