Carter immediately understood what Zebulon was getting at.
So, the guy just wanted to have his fun without any real commitment.
He'd gotten used to Naomi chasing after him for so long, and their dynamic had always involved her being the one to compromise and give.
Now that Naomi had changed, Zebulon felt unsettled, and it was souring his mood for everything else.
He certainly had no time to sort out his own feelings.
"Well, you could at least be consistent."
"If you had just paid a little more attention... This is serious. Honestly, most of the pain Naomi has gone through is because of you. If I were her, I wouldn't like you either."
"When other people pursue someone, they at least get a response. With you, she gets nothing but hurt, time and again. I bet Naomi has been hurt more in the last few months than in her entire life before this."
"Zebulon, if you really want things to go back to how they were, you can't just let her do all the work."
"Girls need to be wooed sometimes, you know?"
Zebulon furrowed his brow. He didn't look pleased, but he still asked, "So how do I do that?"
Carter said, "The Memorial Day weekend is coming up, right? You could take Naomi on a trip, just the two of you."
"If I remember correctly, Naomi's been in Tyra for a few years now, right? She's spent all that time chasing you, with no time to go back home. If you took her back to Zion for a visit, she'd be really touched."
Zebulon filed the idea away but remained stubborn verbally. "We'll see."
Carter saw right through him and just smiled, not calling him out.
The two of them went to their usual club, where Zebulon partied all night. He was woken up the next day by a call from his family.
"Why aren't you at the hospital?"
Mrs. Hughes' voice was cold, as if she were suppressing her anger.
