Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 88

A wave of frustration washed over Naomi.

But seeing her mother’s disappointed and angry eyes, Naomi knew this wouldn’t end until she apologized.

Suppressing her emotions, she choked out with red-rimmed eyes, “I’m sorry.”

Zebulon looked at the heartbroken Naomi, and an unfamiliar sense of panic stirred within him.

“I—”

Before Zebulon could say it was okay, the others had gathered around, launching into a chorus of accusations against Naomi.

“Naomi, why would you hit him? What have you been up to lately? Who is this guy? We can never find you when we look for you. Have you been hanging out with the wrong crowd?”

“You used to care about Zebulon more than anyone. How could you do this to him over an outsider?”

Listening to Colin and the others, Mrs. Gonzalez’s gaze on Naomi grew even sterner.

“Naomi, is that true?”

Naomi suddenly felt exhausted.

She looked up, her eyes sweeping over the faces before her. The look of utter defeat and despair in her eyes momentarily silenced them all.

Colin and the others awkwardly trailed off, wanting to say more but finding themselves unable to.

Naomi gently pushed her mother’s hand away and walked over to Steven’s car window, offering him an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry you had to see that. You should head back now.”

Steven ran a hand through his hair. Seeing so many people glaring at him and Naomi, he felt it was necessary to explain.

He got out of the car, politely greeted Mrs. Gonzalez, and said softly, “I’m a colleague of Naomi’s. She’s been interning at our company. We have a team-building event tomorrow, and she said she needed to come home to get some more formal clothes, so I drove her back.”
