Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 89

Naomi, who had just reached her front door, felt like she was suffocating when she heard her mother's words.

She had a sudden urge to tell her everything—about Zebulon and Tiffany, about everything they had done to her. But thinking of the close relationships between the families in their community, Naomi swallowed her words.

“Miss? What’s wrong?”

The housekeeper asked with concern when she saw Naomi return with red-rimmed eyes. “Did someone bully you?”

That one question made Naomi’s tears flow even more freely.

She truly didn’t understand. How could even a housekeeper see that she had been wronged, while her own mother was thanking the very people who had hurt her?

Was their love for her all a lie?

“It’s nothing.”

Naomi shook her head gently, slipped into her room, locked the door, and buried herself under the covers, shutting out the world.

When Mrs. Gonzalez returned home, Naomi was nowhere to be seen.

She frowned and asked the housekeeper, who told her Naomi was in her room. Mrs. Gonzalez’s expression soured.

“What has gotten into that child? When did she become so rebellious?”

The housekeeper looked at Mrs. Gonzalez, hesitating to speak.

“Ma’am, perhaps we should hear what Miss has to say? She looked very upset…”

Mrs. Gonzalez scoffed. “What does she have to be upset about? Haven’t we been good enough to her? Honestly, the older she gets, the more trouble she causes.”

Seeing that Mrs. Gonzalez was unwilling to listen, the housekeeper, knowing her place, said no more.

That evening, Mrs. Gonzalez called Naomi for dinner. Naomi came down obediently, but she was much quieter than usual.

Unable to hold back, Mrs. Gonzalez started in on her. “What is going on with you? Why are you interning when you’re only a sophomore? Does the family not give you enough money?”

Mr. Gonzalez, who had been briefed on the situation, usually sided with his wife. But seeing his daughter’s silent demeanor today, he finally spoke up.

“Alright, don’t always blame the child. Today’s incident was hardly Naomi’s fault. Her colleague drove her home, and Zebulon attacked him without a second thought. How would you feel if you were in her shoes, facing your colleague? Put yourself in her place. What did Naomi do wrong today?”
