Theo took a steadying breath and glanced at the man standing nearby.
Of all the days, Hector had to be here too. And, of course, he just happened to catch everything.
Theo hadn’t planned on getting involved. He usually kept his nose out of other people’s business. But he could tell Oliver really didn’t like Mr. Newton, and well, sometimes you just have to make trouble.
“Mr. McKee, what a surprise,” Theo called out, his tone casual.
“Pretty unexpected,” Hector replied, letting his eyes rest on Patricia for a moment. “So, what brings you here, Mr. Newton?”
Theo let go of Patricia’s arm and put on his best polite voice. “Just needed to have a quick word with Ms. Martin.”
Hector didn’t call him out. Instead, he gave a little warning. “I just saw Mr. Holmes’s assistant come back upstairs for something. You might want to be careful, Mr. Newton.”
Clearly, he’d seen not just this argument, but also Patricia chatting with Kyle downstairs.
“Thanks for the tip, Mr. McKee.”
Theo didn’t stick around. He turned and walked off.
Patricia rubbed her wrist as she watched him leave, a small, satisfied smile tugging at her lips.
Zhou, who’d been standing nearby, watched Patricia with open curiosity, like he was trying to figure her out.
So she’s up and walking again? That takes real grit. Anyone who’s done rehab knows how rough it can get.
When they left the golf course and got in the car, Jackson reached into the mini fridge and handed her an ice pack.
“Miss, you just came today to show your face in front of Mr. Holmes, didn’t you?”
Patricia pressed the ice pack to her wrist. “You think I’ve got nothing better to do?”
“But you didn’t even do anything.”
“Kyle owes my dad. Just showing up today was enough to bring up all those old memories he has about me and the Newtons at each other’s throats. Now that those memories are fresh, the Newton family is going to have a much harder time getting their hands on the energy division.”
“Even if he doesn’t say no outright, Kyle’s definitely going to make things tough for them.”
“But if the Newtons don’t get what they want, it’s not like we’re getting any benefit,” Jackson pointed out.
“Still thinking about Ms. Martin?” the assistant asked.
Kyle nodded. “Yeah.”
“When I went up to grab your lighter, I saw Mr. Newton and Ms. Martin arguing in the hallway.”
Kyle let out a slow breath. Things were getting complicated.
He owed Jason, and even though Jason was gone, his daughter was still here.
If Patricia hadn’t shown up today, the Newton family would’ve gotten what they wanted, no problem.
But now, everything was up in the air.
He couldn’t just ignore what Jason had done for him. And with Atticus still around, he didn’t really have a choice but to get involved.
When you’re all at the top together, you watch each other’s backs. If trouble ever comes, maybe they’ll do the same for you.
