You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 400

Otherwise, why else would this mess still be going on after almost a year—still caught up in their family’s never-ending drama?

Seriously, they’re all loaded. Can’t they take their fights overseas or something? Don’t they get this isn’t some lawless place?

“Mr. Newton says Ms. Martin was armed?”

“Yes,” Theo said.

Brandon looked straight at Patricia. “Ms. Martin?”

Patricia met his eyes, voice calm. “I don’t know what Mr. Newton is talking about. All I know is he asked me to meet, and I ended up getting shot by a sniper.”

She stood up as she spoke, slipping off her coat. Her slim gray top underneath had a long tear on the side, still stained with blood.

Brandon’s eyebrows shot up as soon as he saw the wound.

He wasn’t the only one. Every officer in the room could tell at a glance—that was a gunshot wound.

“This is serious. The two of you will have to stay here tonight.”

Patricia didn’t object. The station had private rooms for questioning, anyway.

They separated them right away.

Brandon rounded up his team and headed straight to the scene. Sure enough—

A bullet was wedged deep in a tree trunk.

Brandon followed the line of fire, scanning the area.

They were by the sea, with no tall buildings anywhere nearby. From this angle, the shooter must have been hiding up a tree.

But a sniper rifle in a tree? That didn’t add up.

“Maybe it was from that security tower?”

“And isn’t it weird that all the surveillance cameras broke at the same time?”

Brandon gave his teammate a look. “Did you forget the huge thunderstorm a few days ago? The news said lightning hit the signal tower here.”

“Let’s go check it out.”

They climbed the stairs to the tower. Sure enough—clear evidence someone had been up there recently.

“Mercenaries, snipers... Life with the rich really is something else,” one officer muttered.

Everyone else just shook their heads, but Brandon looked thoughtful.

Aiden shook his head. “Not sure. Didn’t hit him, but he’s shaken up.”

In other words, the guy was still alive, but who knew if he was hurt—he hadn’t checked, just grabbed him and rushed back to Golden Bay.

Oliver grunted and walked over, landing a hard kick on the man’s thigh.

The guy let out a muffled groan of pain. Oliver was about to kick him again when a steady voice cut in behind him.

“Oliver, that’s enough.”

Miles’s deep voice was calm but left no room for argument. Oliver stopped cold.

Miles gave the man on the ground a quick glance, his tone clipped. “Pick him up. We’re going to the Stone family.”

They loaded up and headed out, making it clear they weren’t coming for a friendly chat.

On the way, Oliver called Colton.

“Is she hurt?”

“Just a few scrapes. She’s at the station now. Things are out of our hands—Theo called the police, said Aunt Patricia was armed. Cops are investigating.”

“Alright. Then let’s get the media involved. Blow up the sniper story. Make sure Sean sees what happens when he sticks his nose in where it doesn’t belong.”
