“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Those online comments are hilarious. Go take a shower already!”
“You’re all sweaty and you stink.”
Oliver stood by the bed for a moment, looking down at her. He couldn’t help but enjoy the spark in her eyes, the way her brows danced. She was like a sly little rabbit—completely adorable.
She had so much on her mind all the time, but right now? She actually seemed carefree.
After a moment, he reached out, cupped her face, and kissed her—hard.
His rough fingertips slid from behind her ear, gliding down through her soft, silky hair.
As the first light of morning broke through the sky, people all over the city were heading home after long nights on the job.
The police station was no different.
Brandon had spent half the night dealing with a bunch of punk kids who smashed windows and tried to steal from local shops. He’d given them a scare, then dropped the whole group back at their parents’ doors.
He got out of his car, his palm still red and sore, and walked inside.
He headed straight for the old sergeant’s desk and grabbed a bottle of liniment.
“What’s up, Brandon? Rough night?”
“If the parents won’t do it, we have to. Those brats are tough—I think my hand hurts more than they do.”
Brandon called back as he walked over to the group of coworkers huddled around a phone.
“What’s so interesting? Got some juicy gossip?”
“Brandon, it’s not gossip this time. It’s a guy.”
Brandon grinned, rubbing his hand as he leaned in. “Must be some guy if you’re all glued to your screens. Let me see.”
The Newton family case was over. There was no real reason for them to talk anymore.

“This Skyline Entertainment is kind of interesting. They can’t stop Emerson from taking them over, but somehow they managed to get in touch with you. How’d they manage that?”
Hector stood with his arms crossed, leaning against Oliver’s desk, looking puzzled.
Oliver flipped through a stack of documents, barely looking up. “The interviewer.”
“That old finance host? He’s what, forty-seven? Sure, he’s got a lot of connections, but even so, he should know not to use them without permission. Did you give something away during the interview?”
Oliver kept turning pages, not even sparing Hector a glance. “Do you have any proof?”
“Wait, seriously?” Hector dropped his usual laid-back attitude, leaning in with wide eyes. “You knew Emerson was talking to Skyline, and you knew the host was close with their CEO. You did it on purpose, didn’t you?”
