“You’re so pretty, your future husband’s never going to stand a chance. He’ll be head over heels for you.”
“If only I were a guy. Life would be so much easier.”
Patricia shot her a look, eyebrows up. “Wait, are you sure you’re straight?”
“Totally. I just have a thing for beauty, that’s all.”
The two of them traded stories, swapping the latest office drama and funny things that had happened recently.
When the waiter finally set down the last dish and promised no one else would come into their private room, Aurora put down her chopsticks and leaned closer.
“So, everyone at the office is guessing that Ruby’s gonna join Skyline Entertainment.”
Patricia nodded. “Makes sense. She did a great job handling PR before she left.”
“Who’s running the marketing team now? Still Sally?”
“Yeah, still her. Actually, Ruby’s been meeting up with Sally lately. They seem to get along pretty well.”
Patricia dropped her gaze, a small, satisfied smile on her lips. That made things simpler.
“I actually wanted to ask you for a favor.”
Aurora straightened, suddenly attentive. “Just say it.”
“I need you to spread the word that Ruby is Emerson’s only daughter. It’d be even better if Ruby said it herself.”
Aurora looked confused. “Isn’t that helping Ruby? Why would we do that?”
But before she could finish thinking it through, she remembered the last time Ruby showed up in the news.
Same trick, again?
“She’s not going to fall for the same thing twice. Ruby’s smarter than that.”
“She’ll fall for it,” Patricia said, sounding absolutely sure.
“Ms. Ruby Martin.” Sally stood, greeting her and offering up her seat.
Ruby laughed, giving Sally’s shoulder a friendly pat. “No need to be so formal. Sit down.”
“I’ll leave you and Ms. Klotz to talk. I’ve got things to do.”
Tina nodded. “Go ahead, Sally.”
Once Sally left, Ruby set her bag down. Tina closed the door and led her over to the window. They both looked out at the city, the buildings stretching up towards the clouds, the skyline almost glowing.
Tina’s eyes grew thoughtful as she leaned on the windowsill. “Sally just had an interesting idea.”
“She said you should play up the image of being your dad’s only daughter. That way, even if he has any secrets, like another kid out there somewhere, he’ll be too scared to let it go public.”
“So… you want me to lean into the only-daughter thing?”
Tina nodded. “Exactly.”
