She sat on the sofa, legs crossed, looking every bit like the boss who could make or break someone with a single decision. Right now, she seemed like she was just waiting for someone to go down.
“Mr. Martin, the press has blocked the entrance downstairs. Some of the board members are here, but they can’t get inside.”
One problem wasn’t even over before the next one hit. Emerson glared at his assistant, his voice sharp with frustration. “Which board members? Who’s here?”
“Allen and a few others from the board,” the assistant replied.
Emerson felt a rush of anger, his head pounding. He slammed his palm on the desk. “Send them home. I don’t have time to deal with them right now.”
Since three in the morning, Martin Group had been a complete mess. It was just one thing after another, and Emerson didn’t have a single person he could really talk to. For the first time, he realized just how much he depended on Tina.
His phone rang, breaking the tense silence. Emerson checked the caller ID, walked over to the window, and lowered his voice. “Mr. Martin, we couldn’t catch her. The police picked her up.”
“What am I even paying you for?” If Wilma was with the police and had any other evidence, there’d be no way to handle this quietly anymore.
That day, the whistleblower’s case was transferred to Brandon’s department. After being off the radar for ages, Wilma finally showed up. She sat straight-backed in the police station, waiting as they checked if the audio evidence was real or if it had been edited or taken out of context.
Half an hour later, a tech analyst came in with the evidence and shook his head at Brandon.
“This phone—you said your husband gave it to you?” Brandon asked.
“Yes,” Wilma replied.
“Why didn’t you come forward years ago? Why now?”
Wilma lifted her eyes to meet his. “That’s a good question. Did your rookie tell you how many cars followed me from my place to here?”
Brandon glanced at his trainee, who nodded.
If Wilma hadn’t been picked up by a police car, she probably wouldn’t have made it here alive.
