“So you’re telling me the boss just happened to pick tonight to come back?”
The lawyer nodded, looking uneasy and avoiding Tina’s eyes. “Yes.”
“This is how you handle things for me? If he hadn’t come back to Riverdale tonight, if he came back tomorrow, if Emerson could be at the board meeting tomorrow morning, we’d have a completely different situation.”
“The board meets at nine, Tina. Emerson’s been arrested. How am I supposed to run the meeting now?”
Power hadn’t landed in her lap like she’d hoped.
Patricia was waiting in the wings, watching for her chance to strike.
As for the CEO seat, who knew who would end up with it now?
Lately, rumors had been flying, people whispering that she was behind everything that happened to Emerson.
If Patricia managed to grab the top spot, Tina would be left holding the blame, while Patricia got all the benefits.
She hadn’t done all this work just to hand it over to someone else.
No way. Not happening.
“The only good news is, we already prepped Mr. Martin on how to handle police questions. The company shouldn’t get dragged into this,” the lawyer added.
Tina’s heart raced. If the company stayed in her hands, she could manage whatever came next.
But if she lost control now…
All their hard work would be for nothing.
She picked up her glass, took a long drink, then waved for the lawyer to leave. “Go keep an eye on the police station. Call me the second anything happens.”
Once the door closed, Tina grabbed her phone and made a call.
“Watch every entrance to the company. I don’t care what it takes, do not let Patricia into the board meeting tomorrow. Understood? No matter what, she can’t get in.”
“If you pull this off, five million is yours.”
“If you take her out permanently, I’ll add another three million.”
She hung up and glanced at the time.
He quietly shut the bedroom door, crossed the living room, and went into the study to return the call.
“Grandpa fell. Dad wants us home right away.”
“What happened?” Oliver’s heart skipped a beat as he hurried down the hall and knocked on Roger’s door.
“He got up to go to the bathroom and slipped. Everyone’s headed to the hospital. You need to get back as soon as you can.”
“Is it serious?”
“He’s almost ninety, Oliver. Nobody’s feeling good about this. The whole family’s worried. Come home now.”
“Uncle Oliver, what’s going on?” Roger mumbled, bleary-eyed as Oliver shook him awake.
“Get dressed. We’re going to Golden Bay. Great-grandpa fell. Your grandfather wants us there.”
In the middle of the night, Sara got dressed and was ushered downstairs, barely awake.
“Uncle Oliver, isn’t Aunt Patricia coming with us?”
