“There’s way too much. It’s honestly kind of scary,” Aiden said.
Jackson shot him a look. “You seriously need to stop her from buying more. She’s storing it at everyone else’s place now. Did you see Mr. McKee’s face?”
Patricia nodded, almost absent-minded. “Yeah, got it.”
That morning, Patricia had barely stepped into the office when a resignation letter showed up on her desk. It was from Kent.
She leaned back in her chair and glanced down, a small, wry smile tugging at her lips. “So, Mr. Lawrence wants to quit?”
“Isn’t this what Mr. Martin’s been waiting for all along?”
Patricia drew her hand back from the desk, her voice calm and even. “Mr. Lawrence, do you have some kind of issue with me?”
Kent let out a dry laugh. He’d always hated how Patricia could act so gentle and composed. “Why don’t you tell me, Mr. Martin?”
She didn’t answer him directly, just tried to appeal to reason. “You’ve been with the company longer than almost anyone. I just took over, and now you want out? Is there something about my leadership you’re unhappy with?”
“You took charge and started clearing out old accounts the second you got here. Everyone in Riverdale’s business world is talking about how ruthless you are. I wouldn’t dare have a problem with it.”
He shoved the resignation letter closer to her. “Mr. Martin, there’s nothing left to talk about. Just sign.”
Patricia looked up, voice light. “Did Ms. Klotz know about this?”
Everyone knew Kent was loyal to Tina and Emerson. If he left, his spot would open up, and Patricia would definitely fill it with her own person. Tina would lose her mind.
“If I remember right, Ms. Klotz and Patricia were the ones who promoted you in the first place. You’re just going to walk away? Won’t Ms. Klotz be upset?”
She reached for the phone. “Want me to give her a call?”
Kent slammed his hand down to stop her. “Mr. Martin, whether I stay or leave is my business.”
Their eyes locked. Kent’s stare was icy, almost hostile. He was just like Allen—looked down on women, especially those he thought weren’t as good as him.
Patricia hadn’t even started pressing him yet, but Kent was already losing his cool.
“In that case…” She picked up her pen and signed the letter, sliding it back across the desk. “Mr. Lawrence, I hope everything goes well for you.”
Emerson was in jail. Patricia had taken over and was already making big changes. And Tina was still hanging around, making sure Amelia didn’t mess up under all that pressure.
As HR director, Amelia was stuck in the middle, unable to please anyone.
She picked up her mug, hoping for a moment’s peace, just as her assistant walked in with a folder. “Manager, here are the candidate files. I’ve sorted them all for you.”
Amelia flipped open the top resume and paused. This candidate’s background was perfect. She tapped the name. “What position did they apply for?”
“Sales Director,” the assistant said.
The mug slipped from Amelia’s hand and hit the floor with a loud clatter.
Kent had barely cleared his desk, and there was already someone ready to step in?
A chill ran down her spine. Was this all Patricia’s plan from the start?
She didn’t even have time to process it before the phone started ringing again.
