You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 622

“The auditors are already poking around Ms. Klotz’s department. Want to guess what’ll happen if they discover she’s been secretly covering up for your Skyline Entertainment all these years?”

“Even if there was a cover-up, it was my dad’s money. What’s that got to do with you?”

Patricia just raised an eyebrow, but before she could say anything, Jackson, who was standing in the doorway, laughed. “Your dad’s money? Everyone knows Emerson basically begged the board for a lousy three-thousand-a-month paycheck just to keep his spot. His money? Where was he supposed to get it?”

“Did having a kid make you lose your mind, or were you always this clueless?”

Ruby choked on her anger.

She spun toward Jackson, voice sharp. “Don’t talk nonsense.”

Jackson only shrugged, totally unfazed. “If you say so.”

“If the kid isn’t even yours, why not just toss him to the sharks?”

“And you—your dad was obsessed with having a son to carry on the family name. If you’d brought your kid home ages ago, maybe he would’ve finally left you alone about it. Now look at you, burning your life down over some woman. Honestly, it’s almost sad.”

“Ruby, what’s he talking about?” Grandma’s eyes lit up from her hospital bed the second she heard ‘family name.’ That was her sore spot. Always had been.

She never let it go. Neither could Ruby.

Jackson’s words had Ruby fuming, and Grandma’s question only made it worse. She whipped around, snapping, “Why do you care?”

Ever since Emerson went to prison, she and Grandma had only kept up the act of being polite. If either of them ever crossed a line, that would be it.

“What do you mean, why do I care? Ruby, do you even get it? Your father wanted a son more than anything—”

After Ruby left, Patricia looked at Grandma and clicked her tongue in mock sympathy. “Pathetic.”

“Patricia, you’re the one who tore this family apart. Why? Why can’t you just let it go? Why do you keep chasing revenge for your parents? Why can’t you let the dead rest in peace, and let the living move on?”

Let the dead rest? Let the living move on?

Patricia wasn’t just avenging her parents.

She was avenging her own son, too.

See? The people who benefited never stop to think about someone else’s pain. All they ever do is ask why you can’t just let it go.

Patricia uncrossed her arms and took a step closer. “Tell me, if Emerson had been the one who died, would you still say all this?”
