The parlor was quiet.
Hector cleared away the takeout, grabbing a napkin to wipe the last bit of grease off the table. He was about to toss everything in the trash when his phone rang, buzzing against the tabletop.
He glanced at the caller ID, pressed his tongue to his cheek, and couldn’t help but smile. “Can’t even wait a little, huh?”
“Who is it?” Sara asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
He handed her the phone. “Pick up and say I’m in a meeting.”
Sara nodded and answered, her tone brisk and efficient. A few words later, she hung up and handed his phone back.
Hector finally explained, “It was Kent. Used to be the sales manager at Martin Group. Your Aunt Patricia wanted to let him go without paying him off, so she dragged me into her little scheme.”
Sara tried not to laugh, covering her mouth as she leaned in. “He’s managed teams for years and still fell for that?”
“He’s not exactly a genius,” Hector said with a shrug. “We just had a drink together at some work thing, made a little small talk, and suddenly he thinks there’s something up. It’s not even official.”
Maybe not dumb, but definitely a bit off.
He and Sara had barely finished exchanging looks when a text from Kent came in. The tone was so humble it was almost embarrassing.
Hector gave it a quick glance, then deleted it without another thought.
Even if Kent had some skills, there was no way Hector would actually bring him in. That’d just make him look like an idiot.
If he hired Kent, the real fool would be him.
That evening, Patricia had dinner plans for work.
All the department heads were meeting for a big dinner. Around four, Jackson let Marian know Patricia wouldn’t be home for dinner.
At seven, Mr. Padilla got home. Marian hurried him to wash up and get ready for dinner.
Sara came out of the downstairs bathroom, drying her hands, and noticed Patricia wasn’t there. “Marian, where’s Aunt Patricia?”
“Miss said she has a work dinner tonight. She won’t be home,” Marian replied.
