“Excuse me, sir. Would you like to come in?”
At the private tearoom door, a waitress’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He stepped aside to let her pass.
The door opened and closed, sealing the two of them inside with the rich, soothing scent of tea.
“Thank you,” Patricia said quietly.
She glanced at the waitress, who couldn’t have been older than a college student. The girl wore a blue-and-white china-patterned uniform that was clearly cheap, but it didn’t hide her fresh-faced prettiness.
“Is there someone waiting outside?” Patricia asked.
The girl looked a bit startled, her gaze lingering on Patricia’s face for a few extra seconds, like she was checking to see if Patricia was wearing makeup. “Yes,” she answered.
“Could you let him know when you leave? He’s blocking the door.”
The waitress didn’t quite get it, but she nodded and left.
The wooden door barely had time to settle before it opened again. Brandon walked in, all business.
He pulled out the chair across from Patricia and sat down.
Patricia smiled, the corners of her lips lifting just enough to be noticed. “Honestly, I half-expected you wouldn’t show, Mr. Lantz.”
Brandon’s reply was cool and even. “No reason not to. Like Mr. Martin said, maybe you used me, but this is still my job. That hasn’t changed.”
“I’m glad you see it that way,” Patricia said.
The kettle on the table was still simmering. Patricia started to make tea, her movements slow and deliberate. Another server poked his head in, but Patricia just shook her head—no need for anything else.
The process was simple: pouring, steeping, serving. But in Patricia’s hands, even something as ordinary as making tea looked graceful. Every motion was smooth, like she’d practiced it a thousand times. She made it look effortless, like it was part of who she was.
Brandon had seen plenty of people make tea. But Patricia was different. For her, it was almost art.
