“Dry air in the fall—that’s just how it is,” Patricia muttered, not really expecting Oliver to listen.
Seeing the way his face stayed stone-cold, she gave up on explaining. She pulled her hand free, tossed the tissue in the trash, and walked away.
She’d barely reached the bedroom when he caught up and wrapped his arms around her from behind. “Are you mad at me?”
His chin rested on her shoulder, his voice soft as he nuzzled close. “I’m just worried about you.”
Patricia stayed silent.
Mr. Padilla gently led her to the sofa, sat her down, and pulled out his phone. He opened a video app and typed in “hangnail.”
The first thing that popped up was a news story: “Woman gets bone infection after pulling a hangnail.”
Patricia just stared.
“Pattie, you can never be too careful.”
“Mr. Padilla, you’re being ridiculous.”
She shoved him aside and stood up. “I’m not arguing with you. You’re hopeless.”
“Pattie…” Mr. Padilla sounded defeated.
When Patricia kept marching down the stairs, he called after her again.
“Pattie…”
The more Oliver called her name, the faster she went.
Near the bottom, Patricia spotted Marian walking through the living room and called out, “Marian!”
Marian spun around, seeing Patricia and Oliver coming down, one after the other. “What’s up?”
“He’s driving me crazy. Can you block him for me, just this once?”
Come on, think! If she ticked off Uncle Oliver, she was doomed.
Sara scrambled. “But if it’s family saying that stuff, maybe it’s just because they care, right? Everyone wants their loved ones to be healthy and live forever. Isn’t that right, Marian?”
“Exactly!” Marian chimed in, nodding. “It’s because they care.”
Patricia watched the two of them try to backpedal and couldn’t help laughing, even as she rolled her eyes. She shot them a cold look, then turned and stomped off toward the tea room.
Oliver started to follow, but she snapped, “Don’t follow me.”
The tea room door slammed shut. Mr. Padilla rubbed his nose, looking sheepish.
He turned to Sara and Marian, who were awkwardly standing nearby. “Not bad, you two.”
Then he looked at Sara. “You still have enough money?”
The message was clear. Their little act might’ve been obvious, but he was happy enough to check if she needed a little extra pocket money.
