You Looked Down on Me Once Now You Look Up (Patricia and Oliver) novel Chapter 679

Every holiday, the Padilla family had one unbreakable tradition—they all went to the cemetery together. Unlike most families who visited on November first, the Padillas always waited until the second. Miles had work every year on the first, so everything revolved around his schedule.

At six in the morning on November second, Oliver dragged Patricia out of bed. Groggy and half awake, she shuffled out the door, barely functioning. She managed to nap a little during the drive, but when they arrived, she was still grumbling under her breath. Mr. Padilla just smiled and spent a while soothing her, until she finally let go of her crankiness.

Patricia was nothing like Oliver when it came to discipline. For her, waking up at seven-thirty was early enough—anything before that left her in a fog for the whole day. As Chelsea always joked, “She can stay up as late as she wants, just don’t ask her to get up early.”

The Padilla family’s memorials weren’t fancy, but they weren’t simple either. There were so many people to remember that the rituals lasted for hours. By the time they got home, the sun was already high in the sky.

While Patricia was busy in Golden Bay, caught up in the Padilla family’s chaos, Ruby was in Riverdale—racing around, desperate to find a lawyer who could clear Tina’s name. She tried one attorney after another. By the time she met with the fifth, she was exhausted. This lawyer was an old classmate of Tina’s and owed her a favor, so when Ruby asked for help, she agreed without hesitation. They rushed to the police station together.

When they came back out, the lawyer’s face said it all. She looked at Ruby and sighed. “Ruby, I’ll do everything I can to get your mom’s sentence reduced, but if you’re hoping to get her out…”

She shook her head slowly.

“There’s just no way.”

The police had put together a rock-solid case. There were no holes, no weak spots to attack. Not even the world’s best lawyer could pull Tina out of this—unless, somehow, the law changed and murder stopped being a crime.

Whoever did this had studied the law inside and out, closing off every possible loophole. No one could save Tina now.
